Weather spells would be sweet. Or how about creating a bit fog over an area? Or ice? Or hail? I'd say if the devs went to the effort of making an actual weather system, they really need to incorporate weather spells in there, too. That would really add some cool strategy and effects, plus be really wizard-like.

If you open up a connection window in Pidgin (I don't have it in front of me right now, so this will be a bit rough), you can type in irc.stardock.com . Below that is a

I like the concept because it offers more gameplay options without much overhead, some variety, and it's cool. But like GW Swicord said, Great Artisans are more of the concept you want here. If this route is followed, it would need a lot of game balancing, like you brought up (a good amount of time, money, complications, etc.). It really sounds like Elemental could be a really nice blend of Civ 4, MoM, and SD's own unique ideas.

Reply to Shards in War of Magic
The world will have several types of shards of which there are duplicates. Controlling those shards gives you mana of a specific type. This mana is then used to cast spells.
So, more shards = more mana, which would then allow you to cast those types of spells more often or save up mana for "big stuff"? Your response also begs the question- what are the types of shards? Just the different mana types, or
I appreciate the opportunity to provide feedback and help shape a game I'd like to play, I'm just surprised Beta testers don't get any sort of discount. My rationale for the discount is: 1. Signing up now vs. signing up right before the first Beta is released has no financial incentive with it si

Being good should be tough, but it should also be rewarding. It's easy to be evil, but that comes at a high cost (even if the evil person doesn't realize it). If alignment needs an actual game presence other than just the type of magic used, I hope it has some tangible benefits along with it. I could see an evil channeler being able to use life magic, but at a reduced effectiveness and vice versa. Maybe to take this idea a bit further, how about just make the three

Are you guys familiar with the game Master of Orion 3? I followed that game really closely during development and they had the same concept built in- just because you *can* do anything doesn't mean you should be able to (or want to). This sounds great, right? Well, as development for that continued, they kept running into problems. How many points should changing a fleet design cost? How does one balance out races with high levels of points with those without?&

Bummer. No discount for being a beta tester, huh? Or is the regular game price going to be higher than $50?

12 Replies 8,933 Views

I'd encourage SD to not be so much like Heroes of Might and Magic 5 was and get into the whole "each race is both good and evil" concept. While it makes some sense and is true on some level, if I'm playing a fantasy game, I want some truly good guys to play to smite truly evil villians. There can be shades of grey in there, too, but too many things out there lose the attraction of the black and white. And I'm certainly for allow both Life and Death magic to have counterpar

Well put, GFCL. I'm not a programmer, but I think I can provide good input and suggestions. Stardock balances out those suggestions with their own idea and the ultimate product is something that not only appeals to a lot of folks, but makes it fun, too. The only cautions are that sometimes just the "hardcore" gamers give feedback during Betas, so what they need/want and what Joe the Plumber (to borrow a current political phrase) wants can be at odds or quite different.

Brad already mentioned terrain will make a big impact. He also said he would like to see battles where dragons take out massive armies of units (since modern graphic cards are capable of rendering a lot of units at once now).

Looking at the screenshots, I think a turn is a day, as research on there is given in days. I wonder if this will be configurable, though...

That would be cool to see and add some strategy/variety to the game. I'm just concerned it could take quite a bit of time and resources to implement it well. And I'm also not sure on what contstitutes a "turn". Is that a week? Month? Day? Year? That would make quite a difference in the ability/need to implement weather changes. Another factor to consider in there would be elevation (considering this is 3D, that should be a factor), proximity t

This is a bit premature, but I can just see it now for Beta testers- How cool would it be to have a content creation contest (say that three times fast!) where the winner of various categories gets their content included as "official" content for the game? Wow. Allowing testers to contribute would really allow SD some free, innovative, and cool options. Granged, there would be a bunch of worthless ones, too, but it may be worth it. Any plans for this, SD?&nbs

I want more info, too, but considering the beta isn't going to be out until Q2 of next year, I can wait. I'm just impressed we got not only a bunch of game site previews, but also an official site all at once. And I'm continually impressed with how wonderful the devs are about chiming in on questions/observations as people have them. Thanks again, SD, for what you've said and allow us, those who want to see this succeed, contribute to its success.

if insane = good, then that's wonderful. I'm sure a game like this would find that very useful. I still get ticked at the early Heroes of Might and Magic games that didn't have it in there. It was easy to get bored with the same maps over and over. I assume a map editor, too, as modding will be supported so fully.

Good to see they clarified the multiplayer details, since somehow Demigod info got mixed up in there. The "Wars of Magic" mode sounds like something that would be great to have more information on in the future.
