You guys make it sound like the biggest problem is when it happens to the player, which is where I'd disagree. The biggest problem is that it happens to the AI players, essentially making the game easier because it essentially removes players from the game. In many ways, I agree. Its a great game. My biggest problem with most of these games (MoO, Civ, most turn based strategy games, essentially), is that the 'live or die' aspect of the game is often dealt with long before you have wars and treaties. And its where Gal Civ 2 has its biggest problem, in my opinion. I generally like playing with fewer star systems, for personal flavour. Unfortunately, having the star system factor at Uncommon and such has poor results in-game (civilizations can get, well, screwed based on starting position [which, imo, is the biggest flaw in this game.. very poor random position mapping] due to lack of stars nearby with planets that can be colonized). I doubt this is the proper place for this, but.. at this point.. Im frustrated enough not to care. I've had nothing but problems trying to get this game.
