you cant take a first champion you met and paid 50 grow like a demigod
It's not just about how much you paid to recruit a hero 100 turns ago, it's about the time and effort you spend developing your heroes. I'm certainly not advocating "Sword Saint"-style champions that can cut through armies but allowing the combat-focused heroes you invested in to at least be able to contribute to and survive

Let's not forget that we are talking about a fantasy world here. Warrior Heroes and Combat MAges should be able to hang in combat. Maybe some sort of "outnumbering bonus" would work. If a hero is facing off against a group of regular units the regular units would get a bonus to their attack based on the number of units. For example, if a champion faces 6 "regulars" the regulars would get a bonus (let's say 50%), but each would still compute their attacks individually

I'd prefer to see the ability to embedded champions in a unit of regular units (sort of a body guard). They would effectively act as one unit on the battlefield. Grouping together champions may be a UI mess (i.e. do the move together? what if there are a lot of unique abilities) I agree on the basic point that it stinks to invest a lot of effort building up your heroes without the ability for them to be useful in later-game combat.

Assuming the real bonuses are 25% and 50% I'd expect the math to be 5 + (5 * .25) + (5 * .5) = 8.75 . Maybe it was the designer's intention to stack up bonuses like that but It's awfully confusing when what you expect to happen is not happening. The criticisms in the article are fair. Especially from a company that made it a

AI player built a city next to (on top of?) a scout. The scout was stuck in enemy territory. Could not move him without starting a war. I expected that he would get booted out of the territory or the AI would not be able to build so close to my unit. Difficult to reproduce as it requires AI to do something...
