This bug requires that your hero stands on the edge of an opponents influence zone. When the zone expands, you will be inside the enemy territory. However, any attempt to move results in the pop-up box asking whether or not you wish to go to war. Choosing 'no' will mean your character cannot move. Not even out of the foreign territory. The only way to move and retrieve your hero is to choose the option to declare war. --LordPixie &n
Yeah you don't want to touch the slider, you need to uncheck "Advanced Lighting" at the bottom center. I was getting the same problem - blurry graphics normally, black screen if I take the slider down, but it's fine if I just uncheck the advanced lighting box at the bottom.
You're exactly right. Unclicking that box did clear things up. Thanks! --LordPixie

The main menu text options (New Game, Load Game, Multiplayer) bleedthrough the loading screen on my system. Looks very strange. My DirectX diagnostic file can be found here: http://pastebin.com/Q8v6DS3u . <img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="http://content.screencast.com/users/LordPixie/folders/Jing/media/ef703a48-7ee3-40a2-9f72-49f734aed9de/Load%20screen%20bleedthrough.png"

I'm having the exact same problem too. As Zamul mentions, it seems to alternate from bad to good on game start. (For what it's worth, I'm loading an autosaved game) Oddly enough, if I turn off advanced lighting, by dropping the slider to zero, the graphics get worse! Comfirmed. I'm having the same problem. I'm also managing to get the Kingdom screen opened sometimes. However, if I then click on the research button, crash to desktop. I'm not getting a debug.err nor the dump files. --LordPixie
