For the original GalCiv, invading a planet requires that you first research Impulse Drive. This will allow you to build transports. Build a transport on one of your planets near the planet you want to invade. Upon completion, launch it. You will be able to load it with soldiers, in a manner similar to loading a colony ship with colonists. Then, move the transport next to the system where the planet you want to invade is located. Use your non-transport ships to destroy all enemy

I'm NOT dead. I've just been very busy for the past few weeks, and I'm afraid even this isn't really my finest work. However, I am back to working on this, and I hope that my writing quality returns to its usual standards. Chapter 6 PLANET ALIA, LETO SYSTEM, UNITED EARTH ALLIANCE 13:43, DECEMBER 8TH, 2225, TERRAN STANDARD TIME “So I’m focusing on Jake, and I’ve got him on the ropes, but I see that I’ve got someone attacking me. So I loo

Well, that was fun. It looks like I picked the right answer, but for the wrong reasons. I had considered early destruction of the Terran battleships as a factor, but I'd predicted the Iconian's better matched equipment as being more decisive. We should do this sort of thing more often.

81 Replies 87,688 Views

It's difficult to make a good call. The Terrans have more than twice the Iconians' firepower and more than twice their total defense. Additionally, the weapons are spread out across more ships, so losing ships won't hurt them as much. On the other hand, the Iconians are better matched in terms of equipment type - armor to defend against Terran mass drivers, while the Terrans have no protection against Iconian missiles - have almost twice the hit points, and will fire first. It will be c

I'm not dead yet! Chapter 5 UES DESTINY , DEEP SPACE 9:32, SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2225 TERRAN STANDARD TIME Yu leaned over Tanaka’s shoulder and looked at the frequency graph again. “You’re sure it’s alien?” he asked. “Absolutely,” Tanaka replied, “specifically, it appears to be the hypernet frequency associated with the Torian Confederation.” “Ah, the Torians,” Bradley interjected, “always liked those guys.”

There may or may not be a Stargate mod. There is a project to make one. It's more difficult than most mods, since we have to deal with the stargate network.

Some ideas I had for random events for the Stargate mod. You may find them familiar. Random Ethical Choice Text : One of our squads has been infested by a symbiotic artificial intelligence. It seems to have been designed to gather information through it's hosts' experiences. It's creator has approached us and offered to share the information with us, as well as that which he has

Mainly it's because in order to get my ecomomy to a point where I'm actually making money, I have to reduce my approval rating to somewhere around 24 percent. That's a guaranteed rebellion right there. Additionally, while I am losing money, it isn't a crisis yet - I still have over two thousand bc. That's more than enough time to research the required economy techs, which I'm hoping will improve things overall.

I feel like a complete slimeball posting this, but this is something that is starting to make me more than a bit curious. At the end of October Stardock announced the winners of the character design contest for Dark Avatar, of which I was quite happy to be one, and said that they would start contacting the winners about their prizes sometime next week. It is now over a week later, and I have yet to be contacted. While the prizes are far less important to me than getting a chara

No need to worry about that. Stardock works on both sides of the developer/publisher fence. I'm sure they know what works and what doesn't. Now, impressions of the game itself: shiny. I particularly like the character designs for the TEC. Yet another way to waste my time.

Chapter 4 MACKINAC SPACEPORT, NEW MICHIGAN, UNITED EARTH ALLIANCE 14:52, MAY 15TH, 2225 TERRAN STANDARD TIME As his aircar sped towards New Lansing, Bradley looked over his shoulder, through the rain, at the spaceport they were leaving behind. It was amazing, what a planet like this was capable of. Despite the lousy weather, the unpleasant odors, and the pervasive cold, New Michigan was quickly become the Alliance’s foundry, as the raw materials in the Langdon an

I think the Ori shutting the network down is far more plausible than a cheap shot at Microsoft. They have been trying, after all. So, here's the backstory behind the mod: The Ori, seeking to increase the effect of their incredible naval advantage, have unleashed a computer virus into the gate network that has shut it down completely. For the Ancients, this is the last straw. They

Yes, but they are big enough to send enough supplies to set up a small camp through. My concern is over colonization - the stargate network completely eliminates the need for colony ships, because you can just walk to your destination. In fact, the Tau'ri already had offworld colonies at the Alpha and Beta Sites long before the Prometheus . And while we certainly wouldn't be able to build a working stargate immediately, we know enough about it that, after research, we could

14 Replies 10,676 Views

I thought about that second approach, but I've decided the only workable explanation is that all the gates have simply stopped functioning. If anyone asks why, we'll just say an Ancient did it. The reason we can't just put gate defenses on every gate is that the no doubt millions of minor human civilizations who haven't made contact with any of the major factions have no reason to do that. They don't know about the Goa'uld, they don't know about the Ori, they certainly don't know how th

This is good news. More features are better. Were it not for the fact that it's not ready yet and that I'm trapped in a corner of Canada so uncivilized I have to connect to the internet through a cell phone , I would have been downloading this already. At the risk of sounding like a total cheapskate, does the free copy of Dark Avatar from the character design contest count as a pre-order, or do I have to spend money for the beta like everyone else?

A new update. With pictures, even. Chapter 3 UES DESTINY , UNKNOWN SPACE 23:14, FEBRUARY 1ST, 2225 TERRAN STANDARD TIME “Cain, equipment report! Tanaka, communications check! Bradley, where the hell are we?” Bradley looked up from the navigation console and sighed. “Well, judging by visible constellations, I’d say we’re somewhere near the Midgard System, sir.” “The Midgard System?” Cain said, “Isn’t that…” “

Then hurry up and clean it up. It's been three years. It's kind of hard to do that when everybody in the world screams bloody murder every time an American government official uses the words "foreign policy." But this is both off the original topic and highly likely to end in a flame war, so let's get back on topic, and slam the Bush Ad

Well, there's the thing. What is the US supposed to do? They're in the diplomatic bad books of everyone on the planet, so their armed forces are about all they can use. Liberating Afghanistan and Iraq, regardless of whatever ulterior motives Bush may have had, were both positive actions for the world as a whole and went a long way towards cleaning up the mess they had to make their to win the Cold War. As far as the original argument goes: I dislike Bush., but only as far

It really depends on what aspects of combat are important to you. If the only reason you want tactical combat is to see two fleets of capital ships blow the crap out of one another, buy GCII. If you want to play space admiral and command one of those two fleets, buy Homeworld. Honestly, SEV has a lot going for it - more detailed race creation, more interesting anomalies and far, far more options

A crazy thought wandered through my head... Stargate doesn't have that many individual ship classes. You've got three Tau'ri hulls, three Goa'uld hulls, and one or two hulls for the Ori, the Wraith, and the Asgard. That's hardly mod-worthy material. But when you think about it, the hull design in the Stargate universe is very modular - the Daedalus is basically the Prometheus , but with some extra jewelery slapped on. Why not take full advantage of the ship design

This is the eternal thorn in the side of every attempt to make a Stargate mod that's come along - the way tactics work in both universe is completely different. So here's a thought: The Ori, having recently arrived in our galaxy and wanting to maximize the value of their supreme naval advantage, releases some Ori superweapon or another that shuts down the entire stargate network throughout the Milky Way. All of 'em. This results in a scrabble amongst the planets capable of producing sta
