I read a few articles today about a columnist in NYC (Lenore Skenazy) who allowed her 4th grader son to take a subway by himself from an Upper Eastside store back to their Manhattan home.
Emphasis mine. From the MSNBC article:
He had been nagging his mother for a long time to let him ride home alone, and finally she agreed to let him take the downtown Lexington Avenue subway and then transfer to a crosstown bus to get home from Bloomingdale’s.

Does the forum feature no longer exist? I can't find a forum link, and when I visit a channel through the "popular channels" area, it doesn't list all the available articles, but rather the blown up title and 200 words, similar to what's found on the homepage. Is there an easy way to browse through articles?
desperate potential homeowners who... wanted to own a home of their own.
It was my understanding that university 'cops' really don't have any authority and so couldn't collect on the ticket anyway

I don't think they have "legal" authority.
Probably depends on the school, but at the University of Washington, the UWPD is a fully vested police force with exclusive jurisdiction over the campus. All officers go through the same academy as city, county, and state police. It has it's own Detective and Crime Prevention uni
I would much prefer being tazed by a cop than having my shoulder dislocated and my face punched as they pinned and cuffed me. Maybe these people haven't enjoyed the opportunity to experience all of the above. I sure have (minus the cuffing).
I bought "The Political Machine" in early 2004, my senior year of highschool. The associated website had a Politics forum, and I cut my teeth reading the likes of Bakerstreet, Steven D, Myrrander, LW, etc. I eventually expanded into greater JU, and have read heavily and thoroughly most every dedicated poster on these boards, and probably only created three articles or so during that time (I don't even know how to check!). I don't think I even launched
I teach my kids credit cards are a trick...a trick to steal your money (the interest rates alone on some cards are staggering). And I believe living within our means is important, and provides proper motivation to do better, earn more, whatever. I think more important than credit cards being a trick, i
And there's your problem. $1 in New York isn't $1 in LA isn't $1 in Boise isn't $1 in Lowcostoflivingsville, Kentucky. Get rid of ALL federal taxes, leave it to the states, which then pay a flat rate to the federal gov. This also places more incentive on states to keep their spending and rates low. If all taxes are being paid to states, those with higher rates will stick out more, those with lower rates will look more appealing. Pr
When Quinn was born, we skipped the ER at UMC in Vegas and went straight to OB. My wife was in labor, which we found out later was keyed off by dehydration. We sat there for over three hours without her even being looked at, and when I asked for water or ice chips or something for her, they absolutely refused, saying they couldn'
Nolo Contendre Legal term, basically a neutral plead. Simply a method of pleading "guilty" while refusing to admit said guilt. Basically to say, "Well the evidence seems to demonstrate guilt, and I cannot win. Instead of fighting I plead Nolo Contendre, but still maintain my innocence."
I don't understand this.. The sales tax on nothing is...NOTHING. He didn't charge them, he fed them. Weird. Technically, he purchased the sandwich for them. There is of course no physical transaction, but the product was paid for by the owner, as he ate the costs. Instead of charging his employees, he "charged" himself, and legally is liable for the sales tax just like any other sales transaction.
Dr. Guy--I think we are talking about two different things. Your article might be fact, I don't know--I haven't had time to read it. My point was that what KFC said wasn't a fact. If the first 600 cats I see are all brown--that doesn't mean that all cats are brown, right? By the same token if 600 Adventist give more than 600 Catholics, that doesn't mean that all Adventist give more than Catholics. That's what I was trying to get at. I'm reading a book on the p
that's good enough for me,,,i was just curious. but i never really thought about our military "farming out" intelligence work before. hmmmmmmm... Unless I am mistaken, I believe the author was active duty in US military intelligence. Describing himself as a "contractor" in the original post, he was simply highlighting the fact that he signed a co
Granted, and the airline made the right decision on the first day. Yet the second, even though they were suspicious, clearly they had done no wrong, nor were affiliated with any wrong doing, nothing legally chargeable, yet were not allowed to board. If it simply was a case where they refused service because of the trouble caused, I accept and support and respect that, howe
The number of shots fired at one target makes me really suspicious on this one. I mean, I went in to Iraq with 120 rounds for an M-16. 50 rounds for a side arm is one huge amount. There were multiple offers. One fired 31 of the 50 shots. Standard PO magazines hold 15 rounds + 1 round chambered. He emptied his handgun of 16 rounds, reloaded a se
which states do this? i was under the impression that all states are required to give all their votes to one candidate. There is no requirement - states are granted the constitutional right to select their electors however they desire. From there, for a state to enact a proportional voting system means
This obscure line would have drifted into the political graveyard except for one thing. The butt of the joke, the one being called "stupid", didn't get it. The one being called stupid was the President. This unobscure line's lasting power has nothing to do with the President "not getting it." 1. The way it came out of Kerry's mouth makes
God has blinded their eyes for a season What does this mean exactly? By god's own hand the Jews refused, and still do today, Christ?
At what point does a Patriot become a Terrorist, and vice versa? When the winner writes the history book. But I do wonder what it's going to take to stir the American pe
Doctors, all of them, are blood-sucking parsites one step up on the evolutionary ladder from lawyers. They live by profiting from the misery of others, and charge exorbitantly for the privilege of merely walking through their doors. It would do no one any harm (in your sense or any other) for the medical profession in general to
Being underage in Seattle, it is extremely easy to enter a bar or club and drink oneself silly. You just need to know the right people, and hold the right friends. If anybody can manage that, it is those with star power. I apologize, but "unjust" as it may seem, I honestly believe our law enforcement officers have better things to do than follow Lindsay Lohan around and see what clubs are allowing her spoiled self to consume alcohol. I refuse
If I faced the same situation, with the same result, but never prayed about it, what then? Do you think Bob might have done the same if you had not prayed? Many things, good and bad, have happened in my lifetime. I do not see any of them as being due to prayer, or lack thereof. My mother heartily disagrees. Who is right? I can answer for you, my mom, but that is the only answer you can honestly give, for you honestly believe it.
There is something known as time difference in the world. Your patronizing tone is unnecessary and rude. I know perfectly well there are differences in time worldwide. The building was struck, or nearly so, around 1 AM local time, and reported collapsing closer to 8 AM local time. This does not preclude an earlier fall, but people did vacate the
God gives us a job and we are to be obedient and not worry about results. You...think everything should be results based when God is doing a work in each individual's heart. <
