...is November, apparently. "Have you ever thought about writing a novel?" This is the question my boyfriend posed to me last week. Well, indeed I have. But I suppose, who hasn't? Here is a group that sponsors a novel writing contest every November. You have one month, exclusively, to write a 50,000 word/175 page novel. This is entirely for fun,

All in all, not nearly as bad as I had readied myself for. I don't think half of my graduating class, which was small to begin with, showed up. I know some of them couldn't make it, but I expect many were just too apprehensive. Some of the missing I was really hoping to see, but others I admit relief at not having to face. I got to talk to some people that I
Aren't you even the least bit curious? I have better memories than High School for sure, but I figured if I didn't go, I'd just wonder what I missed. Then again, if I hadn't kept in touch with anyone, I probably wouldn't be going.
My 10 year class reunion is Saturday, and I'm going. A couple of months back I was undecided, but as the day approaches, I'm actually getting more excited, if a bit anxious. I was certainly not popular in High School, but, as far as I know, I wasn't unpopular either. I had a few good friends, most of whom were the "smart kids." I've kept in touch with a
I think it's generally peer pressure that gets people to try smoking. Family may have something to do with it, but perhaps there's more of a genetic disposition fueling that angle. I'm pretty sure that smoking makes you look cool. It's silly, and we all know about the hacking cough, premature wrinkles yellowed skin, teeth and nails that result, but picture that mysterious woman sitting alone at the end of the bar lighting her cigarette, or t
I am forever looking for something that sounds different than the music I've gotten so sick of hearing on the radio (preferrably different and good). So when Rolling Stone magazine used this very word to describe the Scissor Sisters, I perked right up, downloaded some sample songs, and treated myself to a new CD. How fun! They are often compared to 1970
As sent to me by another girl friend who knew we would both appreciate it. 1. I have absolutely no idea where my purse is. 2. I believe that dancing with my arms overhead and wiggling my butt while yelling WOO-HOO is truly the sexiest dance move around. 3. I've suddenly decided I want to kick someone's ass and honestly believe I could d
Good blog, good story... I can't wait to hear how it turns out. Good luck! and try not to worry about it. All of these little life experiences are valuable, regardless of whether or not they turn out as we hope. The more guys you ask out, the more likely you are to find someone right. I probably wouldn't be with my boyfriend of 2+ years if I hadn't fessed up and told him "I have a crush on you." It took a few weeks for me build of u
Thanks everyone. I do feel good about the donation, and a new haircut is always fun. I've gotten mostly compliments, and my boyfriend really surprised me - he loves it!!
Most stores that sell electronics and such have what I thought were detectors near the exit doors. I'm not prone to steal, but every time I walk through those (what I thought were) detectors, I worry that I'm going to set off the alarm for some reason. I'm surprised no alarms went off at the store. I would be haunted by what-ifs in your situation too, and the desire to avoid confrontation might have prevented me from doing anything at all.
I'm pretty sure I originally got the idea from another blog I read at Joeuser months back. My hair has long since gotten out of control, as I haven't even had it trimmed in 9 months. Partly, this is because I don't have any ideas of what do to with it. Mostly, I'm too lazy and cheap. It's been easy to ignore because, like most guys, my boyfriend likes long hair an
I have a love affair with the microwave oven as well. But I'd have to disagree about the popcorn. My step-mother taught me to pop it on the stove in oil in a sturdy pot, and I love it. I'll eat the microwave stuff, but it just tastes fake to me. Part of the appeal may be fond memories of my grandpa making himself popcorn on the stove when I was little. He put just the right amount of salt on it that it was tasty, but light. Of course now I've
I would say I liked the second as much as the first. Well, I didn't care all that much for either, to be honest with you, but I can see that if you liked the first you'll like the second. And, actually, the second probably has more action.
Thanks KarmaGirl and Qohelet. You're certainly right, my group is awesome. I suppose they wouldn't offer me stuff if they didn't want to. Even as I was typing, I remembered that I occasionally win movie premiere passes. I took my boyfriend to see "The Bourne Supremacy" last week, and we all got free Rolling Stone magazines! I took my best friend to see "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" when that came out. What an awesome movie, by the
I feel like a freeloader. I am constantly benefitting from the generosity and good fortune of my friends and family. I simply can not look a gift horse in the mouth, even to be polite. Examples: -5 years ago my best friend won a trip to the Bahamas from a radio station. Guess who was her guest. -Pearl Jam, Marilyn Manson, Billy Joel concerts - all
Ha... Thanks!~Sarah Oops? My father claims that Kimberly Clark was also in the running, but I'm not sure I believe that...
I purchased a movie ticket from "Aphrodesia" a couple months back. She seemed pretty happy with it. My mom wanted to name me Sarah Lee. Thankfully, the doctor talked her out of it.
The debate rages on: Lee Roth vs. Hagar I'm a Hagar Girl myself, always have been. Partly for personal reasons (he's better looking, Lee Roth grosses me out), partly for more justifiable reasons (he's found more solo success and has a superior voice). I've narrowed it down to two main facts supporting the pro-Lee Roths: he's the original lead we all
For those who love the philosophy of hypocrisy and ambiguity. 1. Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things. 2. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor..... 3. Atheism is a non-prophet organization. 4. If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes? 5. The main reason Sa
Good luck finding a class. I've considered taking such a course myself. Anything is better than nothing. If you pay a relatively small amount for a class and decide you didn't get enough out of it, you could always take another, better one. But once you learn how to defend yourself, you'll walk around with more confidence, thereby lessening your vulnerability to any attacker. Not to mention, you'll learn to kick some butt. Great ide
I can't remember if I've seen this at the video store or not. We really only watched it because there was nothing else to see at the theater. I would never have chosen it. If at all possible, you'll want to watch it after dark. Ever notice how much better scary movies are at night?
Another tale of flesh-eating zombies. I think I outgrew these years ago, but this flick is the fun stuff that slumber parties are driven by. We waited for this one to go to the "Dollar Show," and even then, saw it because there was nothing else playing. I was pleasantly surprised. What a fun movie. If you can't get to the theater to catch it, pick it u
An empty Friday night and a bit of curiousity landed this little flick in my hands a couple weeks back. "Party Monster" is the true story of 80's club kid, Michael Alig, who apparently rose to fame in his circle of New York clubs for his outrageous behavior and wild parties, eventually getting so heavy into drugs and himself that he murdered one member of his ci
Oh boy. Well, she's obviously smart - getting all those good grades in the other classes. You probably shouldn't use reading as "punshiment," but maybe you can get her to brush up skills this summer. I think positive reinforcement (rewards for good behavior) is better than negative (punishment for bad) when it comes to school and learning anyway. I wonder if she did her assignments, but never turned them in, or if she never completed them i
I agree that there are certain things kids shouldn't see. I was horribly afraid of the band Kiss when I was 3. All they did was wear make up and act like idiots. But kids' imaginations are don't need to be fed these types of images. I admire people who take the time to screen out films that are questionable - either by watching them themselves, or seeking the advice of others whose opinions they can trust. It takes a little more work, bu
