Two words Tasunke, "Pavise Crossbowmen". Several Factions in Medieval 2 Total War had them. Basically a medium swordsman armed with a crossbow. Not the best at either role but they were more than capable of decimating infantry charging at them, and because of their great floggin' shield they could hold the line until your heavy infantry came in to clean up. Oh how I loved them lol, only unit you needed to defend castle and city walls. I agree with this idea entirely, th

How does charm relate to animals that can be tamed or used as a mount? If I find a critter A for instance, can I keep it away from the battle and start up a stable eventually (several years and generations later) overcoming the need to domnate the animal?
What I'm getting at is this: if the ability to channel magic is an intrinsic ability for the channeler, then why does he need some non-magical researchers to make his spells for him?
This question relies on the assumption that Sovereigns are able to harness and *direct* their power naturally. Could be they need to learn like kids do with well, everything lol. On the other hand, a soverign may only initially have his power manifest as base-line healing pow
2.A) This sounds like a good system, but how will it prevent people from winning early on by grabbing up shards?
I think Raven, that would be like resources in Civ IV. Just because a civ has iron doesn't mean he'll rush you with swordsmen. He might not have the tech yet, or he could have a personal affinity for a different school... This is assuming he has the means of getting in enough mana to use the shards in the first place.

I think GW Swicord, that death magic only relates to evil because of the way in which it's used. Look at the Necromancer from Diablo II. Raising and exploding corpses, poison, curses etc. He, in a more traditional setting should be as evil as they come, but as it mentions in DII lore Necro in that world equates to t
The Fallen aren't a race or a species. They're a classification of life forms that were MADE by the Titans by changing/corrupting Men and Dragons to suit their purposes.
Go back to Lord of the Rings for a moment. Orcs on Middle Earth are in the purest sense elves, heavily corrupted and angry, but biologically you can still call them elves. Thinking of them as another race just makes it easier for the puropses of classification. And the sa

I'm curious as to how the pic came about. Was it just plucked from a folder of potential profile pics or is it generated dynamically by meshing the pics of the parents?

Apologies if this has already been suggested but you need to include a quest in honour of this lol. One where you have to resolve a land despute between a mouse and a frog. Either of which may or not be mythical sub-species lol.

If you're looking for situational quests there may be inspiration in another Civ 4 mod. Rhyse and Fall of Civilisation had a feature the designer called "stability". The calculation was largely silent, you only got an indocator saying if you're country is stable or not (several different scales there) and whether it was going up or down. I'm mentioning this because the calculation was based on close to every aspect of a country's situation and I'm sure you can glean some situations from it th

I don't think that having independant heroes would be that cool tbh. Sending off quests to other kingdoms would be cool but heroes and/or parties would get way to micro for what I'm figuring the game will go. Having a list on recruitable heroes that specifies quests that they can, can't and demand to do personally would add quite a bit of soul to the game, especially if a hero's skillset isn't entirely in line with their values. What I mean is a hero from a Knightly ord

If you're thinking of implementing tech requirements for some quests it could be interesting to add a fair few to the random techs that aren't guaranteed. So you just researched a new weapon, that tribe over there has has been using one like it for years and would like to teach you new techniques if you help them out. Or you could have a quest simulating the adpotion of a shiny new guild after you research a unique market-related tech. "C

I'm assuming there's going to be religion or some such dynamic in the game. That being the case I'd like to see a quest involving recovering a relic and parading it around X cities in your kingdom. You could have all sorts of interesting possible quirks and twists: your population loves you, a rival cult tries to attack you, raiders, better relations with rival X who has the same religion if you donate it. --And a minute chance that everything goes to plan, just to thro
I believe he was refering to things like Elves, Orcs, etc. Those kinds of fantasy creatures. Dragons will definetly be part of the game, and based off of his comments above, not only will there be dragons in the story, there will be Fallen ones as well:
I realise that, what I was thinking of, and refering to was (roughly) humanoid, Fallen Dragons.
The Fallen come in many shapes and sizes but are all, ultimately, derived from either men or dragons.

There will be Fallen dragons? I can't wait to see those!
Frogboy has said in the past that they're not going to rely on fantasy creatures in the story (only human factions). That said, they're probably an elite caste that you can entice into your service. The question is are they going to be treated like a herd of horses, or will they have the option of becoming real citizens eventually?

You realise Climber that Denryu's system shouyld be just as appealing to you right? I see your reasoning but I prefer the arguments against what you're saying. If it's hard-coded then players can feasably get penalised unfairly for prioritising, if it's soft then you can just make a point of not selecting grey techs. Everyone wins. There's no reason why the dev team can't keep it "soft" and have players such as yourself impose the non-selectable-greys rule on yourself (or mod it in later). Wh

Thank you Astrath, I didn't know that. I'd just heard that A. democracy was a purer form that is yet to be reproduced. Despite what I wrote however it's wasn't really the paralell I was pushing but the... well, liberties that naturally flow on from that but are still relevent. First and foremost is (of course) they actually listen, I've heard horror stories of developers moderating negative threads while the game is still being produced and in some cases, well aft

I have to say Frogboy, I love this post. More companies should follow your business model. What follows is part of the description of Athanian democracy, quite unlike modern varieties and since I first started reading your posts I've been seeing paralells. Given the exclusionary and ancestral conception of citizenship held by Greek city-states a relatively large portion of the population took part in the government of Athens and of other radical democracies
You can imagine the HUGE range of possibilities with such a system...it's going to be nuts
High loyalty + good spies + strong bloodlines = fun. I plan to kill off and fracture all the major players just so I can revel in the chaos of being the only functional kingdom in a sea of duchies at least once. After that of course just use a few well placed alliances to start a world war /evil grin
