Difficulty Levels Revealed

Difficulty Levels Revealed

What difficulty levels do players, and their empires, really prefer? The Spymaster's latest report reveals the truth about a large sample of the current Metaverse spanning 520 players in the 13 top empires.

Gerakken's toughness scale is not meant to measure maximum difficulty level played, but the current preferred levels of play based on recent games. The last 3 entries on a player's record are checked against a scale, averaged, and rounded back to the nearest category. Losses, anomolous scores, and scores from old version games that did not report difficulty are ignored. The preferred sample is 3 games, but if a player has only one or two valid scores, the record is still processed.

The scoring scale is based upon game difficulty:

1 Cakewalk
2 Easy
3 Simple
4 Beginner
5 Normal
6 Challenging
7 Tough
8 Painful
9 Crippling
10 Masochistic

To use a fictitious player record as an example, say the last three games were normal (rated 5), painful (rated 8), and crippling (rated 9). Those add up to 22 points. The average would be 22/3=7.33 rounded down to 7. The player rating is tough (7) on the scale.

422 player records out of 520 contained eligible scores. The scores are listed as a composite of all players combined and are also broken down by empires. Empires are rated on a similar toughness skill to players. The overall rating of each valid player record in the empire is averaged together. Empires with less than 10 usable player records are not listed in the empire breakdowns because the sample is too small to get a real empire toughness, but their players still appear in the composite.

Here are the empire breakdowns, in ascending order of empire toughness:

Anything less than 4.5 on the empire toughness scale represent empires whose players are laid back about difficulty level. A 4.5 to 5.5 represent empires who take a middle of the road approach to difficulty. Anything above 5.5 represents an empire that is leaning toward harder games.

In my research, I have found 4 general types of player records:
1. The traditional climb of starting low and levelling off at some point higher on the scale.
2. The peak and drop, where a player starts low, climbs to a certain height, and then drops back down to a comfortable difficulty level.
3. A straight line: the player starts at a certain difficulty and rarely deviates from it.
4. A lab rat/wild record scenario where difficulty changes very often.

I feel this is a fair scale no matter what the pattern of the record. It does not exclude newer players with few scores on the board, but the three game sample also does not discriminate against older players with long records.

I may make empire difficulty breakdown a standard feature in my Major Empires thread to better help players pin down whether any of those empires are right for them. For the moment, though, I just present my work here for evaluation and commentary. May these numbers prove useful.

Edit: Attempted chart formatting.

The Spymaster has heard the Summons and has returned to the know sectors of Meta space. I have been away for a long time for some messy reasons (explained elsewhere), and am basically still trying to grasp the changes that have occured during my leave.

One thing I have been noticing right off the bat is that we now all wear shields at the end of our medals. Wear them proud, no matter what level they be. Those shield remind me that I still have a job to do, and Gerakken's job is to spy on YOU. :) I'll get my act together over the next few days and catch up on what difficulty hijinks have been happening in the Meta and file a report afterward.

Gerakken calls his two loyal Yor espionage droids to his side. "Fog, Shadow, I know that huge backlogs of old empire data and the Euro security system nearly drove you batty and ate up a lot of processor time, but I am not even caught up with half the empires I need to be! Who knows what the unspied ones are plotting. This is a dangerous situation! OK, we go back to the basics. We have recent files on the 100 most dangerous overlords. Track them and they will lead us to their associates. Then we finish rebuilding the imperial intelligence files from there."

It has been a while, so for the newer folks here, the rules of Gerakken's difficulty system are simple: the last three winning games in a player record are assigned a numeric value, averaged and rounded to the nearest whole number to get a snapshot of what levels people are playing right now. It is a linear scale where cakewalk games count as 1 point all the way up to the now fully functional suicidal level counting for 11 each. A record whose last three wins were on challenging, painful, and crippling levels would turn into 6, 8, and 9 points. 6+8+9=25, divided by three yields 8.33, which rounds to 8. 8 rates this player's current level as Painful. The current rundown:

The addition of the suicidal level has spiced things up a little bit. Maso was once the extreme and it slowly became the norm. Back in the old days, the Maso Honor Roll listed brave souls who took the challenge, but as maso became routine, the award lost its old meaning. Suicidal level deserves its own reward, at least until it too becomes more the norm than the exception. I now present the current Suicide Squad, players who are thriving on the new level:

The Suicide Squad: Aarberg, Arkdoz, and Jaws the Wayfarer.

Orphans: 21 out of 100 are without empires. More top 100 players in empires now than in recent history, true, but still plenty of independents out there.

Until next time, folks. Time for me to slip back into the shadows.

As most of you empiring types know from the Empires forum chatter, there is a player run competition set for the month of March called the Clone Wars. Teams of up to three empires each are temporarily allying (but not merging) to combine their raw game scores in several categories in an epic contest. The normal twice monthly timing of the Difficulty Report will be changed to suit that event.

The special Clone Wars Difficulty Report schedule (with a plus or minus one day margin): Feb. 29, March 8, 16, 24, and April 1.

Good luck to all the teams. The Spymaster will be watching.

How do I change the difficulty level? I cannot find it in the manual or figure it out form the screen

Difficulty level is determined by the AI intelligence. If you increase their intelligence you will increase the level (you may have to change more than one AI's intelligence to increase the level). If you take them all to Incredible, you will have the highest masochistic level (or Obscene, if you have the Altarian Prophecies beta by being a member of Drengin.net).

The mightiest empires of the Meta are about to clash in the Clone Wars throughout the month of March, but who says anyone has been waiting until March to get the party started! The most active imperial overlords and orphans alike are already starting to raise the stakes with version 1.2 and AP. The magic 10 difficulty has been broken not only for the top 25, but for the top 50 as well.

Counting the suicidal players in the same class as maso players, the top 100 of the Meta has only 26 non-masos left. The species is extinct in the top 25 and highly endangered in the top 50. But despite the maso/suicidal supremecy over the top 25, the Spymaster will continue to cover the top 25 as a separate caetgory until the suicidal players destroy too much maso habitat and drive almost all of them into the lower pages of the rankings as well.

The Suicide Squad: Arkdoz, Bam_Bam, Damon Bryson, Exar Kuun, Jaws the Wayfarer, KitWarrior, Paguma, Primipilus Alexus, Primus Ordines Aaberg, Spellforce, and Technician.

Orphans: Holding steady at 21.

Between new version mania and some players undergoing a Galciv version of rigorous training and carb loading to prepare for the Clone Wars marathon, it has been an interesting two and a half weeks since the last report. I think the Clone Wars are only going to make it more interesting. Until next time, the Spymaster will be watching.

Should be noted that the Suicide level has been removed from the last AP beta.

It is half time in the Clone Wars and the teams of allied empires are in the throes of fierce competition. But, for the other folks not in those empires, there is still a lot of excitement to be had. Version 1.2 and AP are re-igniting interest around the Meta.

The report has now been updated to reflect the demise of the obscene/suicidal level experiment found in some early AP builds. There is no maso but maso now. Old suicidal games still in the records have been counted as maso.

Orphans: holding steady at 19.

Historical note: Staffa, the player who in my opinion most defined the framework of what would become the Masoverse, is now number 100 and soon will fall into the depths. It is true that is the fate of all inactive players, to fall down the charts, but it is an irony that one of the most outspoken score bombers of old would not be able to compete for the top spots with his scores now. The original player who went all out to break the bank is not around to see how high the bar was eventually raised.

Time for an update. No need for a top 25 player rundown any more, as the non-maso players have been long driven out of that territory and the suicidal level experiment is over. Even the top 50 will soon be non-maso free.

Thanks Gerraken for documenting the changes. Playing maso used to be considered a "big deal" but now it is expected of the top players. Times have changed and so has the metaverse :)

The newest version through Stardock Central is 1.49[M]003. To have AP, you should have it somewhere on your hard drive. Load it up, and DL the update. Yell if you need more help.

Ooh, whoops. I meant to write, I have 1.49M[b].003 That's the version that shows up on Stardock, and that's what I downloaded on Friday (played, and finished Saturday). So it would appear I do have the latest version... unless it's supposed to be 1.49M[M].003.

No, that is the new one. Hmmm...That shouldn't be a suicidal. I am guessing you played with all on Intelligent, since that is what Suicidal was when it existed. But I know that all but one AI on Intel is Crip, and others haven't been getting Suicidal. E-mail Cari and ask her. Do you have the address?
