Fences only starts with layout on correct monitor about 25% of the time

I am running the latest version of Fences 5 and have "store my layout on a per-monitor-configuration basis" turned on.  I had high hopes for the last major update but the program (which loads as part of my Windows 11 Pro startup) only puts my fences on the correct monitor about 25 percent of the time.  So 75% of the time the first thing I have to do is open the program and do a restore.  What is routinely going wrong? 

I waste several minutes each time doing the restore because it takes several steps to actually do the restore.  You know - select the restore, delete the incorrect image that was created, acknowledge the delete, select the correct restore repoint, tell it not to make a restore point, and so on.

FYI the sequence of my routine is:

1.  Turn on monitor 1 (where there are no fences and no icons whatsoever and is set for horizontal/landscape display).  This is where I routinely run programs.  This is also the monitor where my "hidden icons" carat is located on the toolbar.

2.  Turn on monitor 2 (where all fences are located and set for vertical portrait display).  I have no icons outside of the multiple fences I created.

3.  Turn on pc.  Monitors and pc are all connect directly to a UPS.

4.  Once pc has completed initial boot-up, the screens start to fill and 75% of the time the fences and associated icons are all located on monitor 1 when they should all be on monitor 2.

How do I get Fences to continually put the fences and icon's on the correct monitor?

Per instruction

(1) Turn on Advanced Debug Logging, from the Troubleshooting menu in About.

(2) Reboot

(3) Reproduce the problem several times

(4) Upload a report  using "Create Error Report Package" and follow the on-screen instructions.

I created the requested report and have uploaded it per special instructions.  Hope you can determine the source of the problem when using two monitors. I will say that the past few weeks the failure rate is probably 20% not 50%.  But I am looking for 0% failure.

(1) yes we'll definitely be getting this figured out together šŸ‘
(2) would it be possible for you to save a backup while it's in the "incorrect" state? I can see your config here, but everything looks proper. So I'm wondering what the config looks like when it's broken, and what the log looks like right after it has broken.

So next steps:
Next time it loads up in correct, immediately head to the UI, save a new backup, then send a new error report before fixing.

From what you're saying, I sense the icons will be on that main center desktop, and NOT on the left one where you expect it to be.

Complex issue, but I think we may have gotten to the bottom of it. Could you download/run the following patch?

It will patch your installation live, no reboot required. (Be sure to say "yes" to restart explorer at the end.)

 

The version will be v5.87 (Revision 8-c) which, please verify in the About area of settings.

 

The deep dive in case you're interested: it looks like this is caused by a timing issue, and the fact that when your primary monitor went to sleep, your secondary can be switched over to your primary monitor. In these situations, it's possible that, when your primary wakes back up, that the icons get switched over to it at that time. This would only happen in the scenario where it's exactly that scenario of (1) All your icons are on your secondary, and (2) The primary disappears making the secondary the primary, and then the primary comes back.

Keep reading here, got the same issue since the latest update to Fences 5. Just downloaded the patch and installed it. I'll let you kno if this fixes my problem. Also running a 2 Display system (24/7) without reboot because of daily business use. My desktop is messed up several times a day, so it's getting really annoying.

Got it, thanks comtronic-gmbh. If you do end up with problems, please follow the same instructions above to take Backup snapshots "correct" and "incorrect", + enable Advanced Logging, reproduce the issue at least once and upload an error report.

But hopefully the patch takes care of the problem.

Is your issue likewise that all of your Fence groups and icons were on your secondary monitor? Thanks for any addl info.

Just came back to my office, system was running over night as ususal, I never shut it down. It's even worse with the patch, see attached Screenshots.

Well- that's not great.

So, helpful would be the following:

(1) Start using the Backup feature to save debug backups, so that when you send in your report, we have them. Take them of (A) Working states, and (B) Non-working states, immediately upon getting into them.

You can do this from the Layouts tab

(2) Turn on advanced debug logging. You can find this in the About tab under the Troubleshooting link.

(3) After reproducing the issue and having had saved those before/after backups, go back to the troubleshooting menu and upload an error report via "Create error report package" (and follow the instructions).

You might be able to recreate the scenario more rapidly by turning off your primary monitor for 30 seconds or so and then turning it back on, etc.

ALSO! You can probably start by just going right to "Create error report package" and we can start taking a look at what's there so far while you go and collect more data.

Hopefully this gives us a better look at what is going on.

Just turned on advanced logging and made a backup in correct state. I'll do another backup when it crashes (if possible) Most of the time the system is so FU I'cant even klick anything without hitting Crtl + Alt + Del to Log off and back into my system. Then I see the messed up state, but the question is if a backup saved then (after logging off and back on) is of any use for you.

Regarding the system being so messed up you have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to get back into system ā€“ it's unlikely Fences it is causing this and we do not have other reports of this. I guess a followup question would be: are any applications interactive, or is only the desktop / taskbar locked up when you return from resumed? If you uninstall Fences, is the lockup problem resolved?

Looking at this log, likewise, we're working to get a sense of the problem. From what I can tell, your desired state is this:

All icons and fences are on your primary.

With nothing at all on your secondary ā€“ no icons, no Fence groups.

In the screenshot I see no loose icons that outside of Fence groups

 

 

Then I see this... your "bad state"  with icons outside of groups on the secondary monitor

And the primary monitor, which appears to be sitting below the secondary monitor, just has the overflow of your "Temp auf SRVDC (NAS)" folder portal group.

 

 

When it's in this state - I'm wondering if the program even works at all - if you try to drag around a non-FolderPortal group, do the icons go with it, etc etc? I'm guessing "no" and the desktop is just dysfunctional.

 

Thanks for the help getting to the bottom of this. Looking forward to getting logs with the Advanced Logging enabled.

Itā€˜s correct. The desires state is picture 1 in your post with no icons or fences on the secondary display. And yes, I do have single icons (PDFs, Word and Excel files outside fences, (see right top corner on my main display. 
Once I get the messed up state everything is locked up and my desktop is indeed dysfunctional, I can move the mouse but am unable to click anything, even in the taskbar. Therefore Iā€˜ll have to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del to be able to log off / log on. After Iā€˜ve done this everything can be clicked and moved around again. I donā€™t have to reboot the system, logging off and back on helps.

What we're seeing on our end is your system, for some reason, rapidly alternating between showing one monitor and two monitors. And it's getting stuck in a loop going back and forth and back and forth. Just a matter of getting to the bottom of it.

With that "Advanced Logging" checkbox enabled in the Troubleshooting tab, give this patch an install.

It won't fix the problem, but we've put some additional logging in to try to zero-in on the issue.

I have had 6 restarts with your special patch and everything is working as I wanted.  All fences on screen 2 (vertical monitor) and nothing on screen 1 (wide horizontal monitor).  I have turned off logging.  I will see how it goes this week.  Maybe you found a solution!!!

Hi there. Didn't have a success moment like @Fencesitting unfortunately. Just came to my office and Fences where mostly white, as a few days ago already. In this state the mouse moves but I can't right click on my desktop and logging off windows the usual was is impossible.  I was able to klick the Start button but anything else in that menu is not klickable anymore. So I hat to Ctrl + Alt + Del to log off and log back in. Then I was able to restore from one of the backups within Fences - Layout. Didn't even know about that function before, so it's making it a lot easier to restore a messed up desktop instead of manually move all the fences arout to the right position.

@comtronic-gmbh, I'm going to continue looking, but this unfortunately seems to be a problem with your system and not with Fences.

I'm noticing that we're receiving just a *flurry* of WM_DISPLAYCHANGE messages, which indicate a change in monitors attached to the system. They start and do not let up. And each time, it cycles between the monitor config signatures

Meaning, your monitor that is 1920x1080 keeps coming and going on rapid repeat. 

I'm going to guess that this happens even with Fences disabled (which you can do at the bottom of the Welcome tab in Settings) or uninstalled.

This back and forth would indeed make the system unresponsive. Here's how often those message are coming in from the system (log snippit pasted below). Often numerous times per second.

So yes unfortunately you have a system and/or (more likely) hardware issue going on of some kind. I suggest disabling and/or uninstalling Fences to rule it out, but Fences is not capable of generating messages like this, so I'm confident that it is something else.

Please see the record of these WM_DISPLAYCHANGE events below, with time format including hours minutes seconds and milliseconds. This would indeed render a system unusable.

The system is basically brand new and has been set up a few months ago. I do have connected both Displays directly on the mainboard graphics ports meaning Iā€˜m using the CPU graphics. Just ordered an Nvidia RTX Graphic Card and am planning to install it into this system to connect my two monitors to the separate Graphic Card instead of the on Board ports. Let me get this upgrade done and see how Fences reacts to that.

Yes something very strange is going on with your system, and yes it would absolutely lock up under those conditions. I have no idea what could possibly cause such a rapid and continuous "monitor detached / attached" cycle.

Hopefully the nvidia upgrade helps. Less concerned about how Fences reacts as again I don't think it's at all involved, and invite you to disable (via bottom of the Welcome tab in UI) or uninstall to confirm for yourself.

Added more debug data to try to dig into this further. This patch which will upgrade you to "5.88 (Revision 2)". (You may need to shift+rightclick desktop or open Settings to start Fences back up)
