[0.95] My Early Thoughts are ... its good, very very good

Keep in mind, I haven't played this game since v1.2 of War of Magic, so this is pretty much the perspective of somebody new to the game, so it is very promising in my mind that I like it so much.  It means that other newcomers will likely have a positive first experience.

1 - The music is wonderful.  I love the opening theme.

2 - I always loves the cel-shaded graphics style, and it looks even better now.

3 - I like the city mechanisms in place.  I like that buildings are important.  I like that the queue is important.

4 - Tactical combat seems ok.

5 - Love the RPG elements.  Getting gear, equipping champs, very cool.

6 - Are Butchermen OP?  Everytime they kill something they get another soldier.  I have a butcherman in my group and he's uhhh... very powerful especially for so early in the game.  I have him up to 6-7 men now, it is pretty crazy.. 96 HP.  Nothing early in the game can kill him and he just keeps getting stronger.

So far, this is the game I was *hoping* War of Magic was going to be, so Stardock, thank you so much making this!  I can tell already this is going to be a wonderful game.

 EDIT:

7 - So far I like the operational tempo of the game.  There's few dead turns which is a real drag in some 4X style games.  This is probably because of the RPG elements in the game.

Well, I just got pulverized by the AI.  Magnar took a look at my poor little Kingdom and said... "Hmmm yummy". I'm thinking my loss has more to do with my lack of experience with the game than anything else but I'm happy to see that the AI is capable enough to build an advantage and use it.

Also the forest drake eating my spearmen probably didn't help.

This summarizes all of my experiences so far the past few days and so far with beta 4.  The AI crushes me for score immediately and forever even though I think I have reasonable grasp and execution.  It's not too long til an AI declares and invades with superior forces and numbers.

I was doing better in my 1st beta 4 game (still way behind in score and getting invaded by multiple armies).  Lost a city (which was razed before I coudl get to it) but was taking down the enemy armies only because of fireballs.  Game went into slide show mode in tactical.  Save.  Restart.  Crashes non stop (sent file to support).  Game was probably over anyways since the AIs seem to be expanding and building at far beyodn my ability on normal.

I need a noobie guide or something - I have to be missing something critical or doing something horribly wrong.

Beta 4 is rockin though, love the changes all around even though I'm getting summarily executed nonstop.

Thanks for the feedback and kind words!

Regarding the AI, I tried to tone it down further in Beta 4. On Normal and lower the AI is less aggressive at expanding. I also tried to make the monsters less prone to rampaging around on the lower difficulties.

Please dont tame the beasts too much. I want danger to my outposts and units. Pretty please with sugar on top...!

Yeah don't change it Frogboy!  We just need to get some experience with the game. I love that there is some challenge to be found at Normal.  Although I might actually play a game on easy so I can get a hang for the mechanics.

I would say the game feels a LOT more polished

in MY first game on b4(the computer name AND also meaning FE beta 4) I chose  a LARGE challenging map with 10 ai of which 3 were teamed with me using a custom super sov & race, played the game through, and when magnar had clobbered but not killed a team member I declared war and steamrollered them to death, then started on another empire eventually wiping them out, then attacked the ruiner of summer, but lost the first battle, had the sov and two heros recover in one of my towns, then upgraded the armour and weapons and accories for all three, then went back for a second battle wit the ruiner and wiped the floor with it,, then stared on the third empire, captured six towns from them then their sov decided it was a smart move to stroll into my turf expecting to be able to beat my sov stack, BUT when my sov stack hit it's sov stack, they all died, but as it was MY turf the battle happened upon, the sov did not survive( I think that they had two or more towns left), in the meantime one of my teammates and the other sides were killed by kraxis, and my other teammate killed kraxis, and then the game ended with my score being 17940 and rated draginol.

but the most irritating single issue I had during the game was that the most used spell by me was the arcane monolith, but it kept getting shoved further back in the spell book, and that the spell book does NOT remember which page it was on, so I have to click through EACH of the pages of the spell book to find the spell I used a few seconds before in the SAME turn(and I had 1800+ mana at the end in spite of using arcane monolith a lot).
