Idea for tactical battle formations that came to my mind

I was reading the siege battle thread and Derek's post about how fights shouldn't drag on too long and the starting positions shouldn't be too far away from each other. This brought to mind kind of a fun idea I had about the starting unit positions in tactical battle.

What if, when starting a battle, there was a roll made to see which group, attacker or defender has the tactical advantage when initiating the battle?

The one who comes out on top could make a choice of formation to start the battle with. The winner could choose to surround the enemy from all sides with melee units starting really close by, or to have their units in one group and the enemy units scattered around or what have you. Another option would be for the game to automatically determine a starting formation depending on what kind of units each side has.

Tough and smart enemies like dragons could always start with the tactical benefit unless your units were lead by a very strong tactical leader, etc.

Just an idea.

I like your idea, though it's similar to some other postings.  I suspect it's a feature they will consider 'advanced--include if time allows' considering SD is still working on the basics of the game in FE, but your idea has merit.

Two things they'll need to implement for this to be enjoyable: damage variance based on flanking and rear attacks; a tactical attribute for each unit. Perhaps scouts, invisibles, burrowers, flyers, etc. all get a tactical advantage and a slight damage modifier.

Some of this they seem to want to leave to the modding community (which I don't really understand, this seems pretty fundamental if you want the game to be uber-cool) but they have a lot of other elements that need work too (like the variety of magic spells).

Hahah if modding support for FE is anything like it was for WoM, I doubt there will be much of a modding community at all honestly.

Indeed you are pretty much limited to adding new variations of things that already exist. Want to add some new weapons, spells or traits, no problem. Want to make even to slightest change to how the game actually plays, get real. Basically you can add new content or rebalance things but you can't change even the smallest of game mechanics like caravans. So no, the modding community won't we doing anything of the sort.
