1.09n[b].109: File download error

1.09n[b].109: File download error

I saw there was an update Impulse and keep getting the error:

"File downloaded is smaller than expected"

I am on version 1.09n[b].108 and am trying to update to 1.09n[b].109

I also just got the Internet access message. This is the first time I have seen that. I am connected, as I am typing this on the same PC as Elemental. No FW or AV issues.

Is something up with Impulse?

There it is again... let's see if it works.

Edit: disappeared again. Damn.

don't know about you it's still there for me and keeps dying after 1 gig has been d/led..

so i'm not going to bother again. after trying 5 or whatever times.

i thought the whole point of impulse/elemental patching is smaller patches... only d/ling replacing files that are different. i can't believe a minor update needs to change just about every single file. in fact, surely it shouldn't say 1.9 gig needs downloading when it can only d/l just over 1 gig before croaking it.

either if it knows it'll croak, it shouldn't start. if it starts, it should keep a cache of what's been d/led and check the what's been d/led... before d/ling the exact same thing again and croaks, wasting bandwidth.

I tried reinstalling elemental to pre-beta, then installing the beta to see if it would go straight from 1.09e to 1.09n109. Funny thing was that when I was offered an update from 1.09e, it said that the update it was downloading was 109n109. However, when it was installed and done, I was still sitting on 1.09n108.

Pretty messed up!

I think I'll just wait for 1.09o. Or maybe even a future release.

I also got the "file smaller than expected" error message but I just went ahead and installed it anyway. 1.09e seemed very stable, no crash in about 2 hours of play, whereas 1.09n crashed quite a bit (especially when I reached the Archer availability point), so Ive been saving much more often.

Conclusion - 1.09e for Elegant, 1.09n for um... uNfiNished..

I did as well but now it just worked, only 5 megs, wonder what it changed?

I managed to get the update. Here are the steps I took:

1. Update elemental as you normally would. You "should" receive a "downloaded file was smaller than intended" error.

2. Completely close impulse (use task manager to ensure its closed).

3. Reopen impulse. You should now see and updates pane stating elemental's update was paused. Impulse will prompt you to resume the update, click yes.

4. Run the game and enjoy.

On a side note, how are you able to display the sub-build number (1.09n.109) (the last 1.09)?

Hovering your mouse over the version number in impulse.

When you open Impulse, highlight Elemental.  In the bottom right corner of screen there are 3 tabs.  Put cursor on "View Serial".

It probably says you still have ".108" and that a minor update ".109" is available.  Mine still does.

I tried your suggestion a couple of times yesterday and again this morning, thinking maybe a Dev cleaned it up, but no luck.

your right, apparently i simply re-applied the update again. Sorry for the false hope.

My version of elemental states: (v1.09n[b]1.08)

I got it to work for me  (v1.09n[b]1.08) by simply moving the elemental folder and having impulse detect.  The first improvment I noticed is that it stopped crashing.

I'm adding my name to the list of those that can't get the MVP update.

Just adding in that I have had this same error on two different machines.

If your version number reads "v1.09n[b].108" then you only have the original Beta.  I really don't think anyone will be able to download the so called "minor update" (v1.09n[b].109) until one of the Dev's fixes whatever's broken.  Probably not until Monday, but you never know, these guys (& gals) are pretty darn dedicated.

Now I'm getting 'couldn't download the data file' when I try to run the beta [ie, click elemental, get dragon load screen and it starts running .. then 'couldn't download the data file' and errors out]

Very annoying. Like the direction the beta's going though.

Hey Frogboy, could we get some help here?

Recently downloaded "Update" (looks like 1.09n).  now when i go to start the game, it gives me a message saying that I need to be connected to Internet and have Impulse up and running and my firewall is not blocking the game.  Then C(lose)TD.  So I am Connected, impulse is opened and signed in and Firewall is all AOK with the game.  Impulse says there is "Another" update?  So I tried to download that.  I get (as others have) file size is smaller than expected.  Did as suggested above and exited out of Impulse and then re-opened.  got the download to continue as explained above.  When I open up Elemental, I still get the same error message.

So can't get into the game at all.  Any ideas?

When you open Impulse, highlight Elemental.  In the bottom right corner of screen there are 3 buttons.  Click on "More" button.  Select "cancel update".  Run button should now reappear.

BTW - it looks like a DEV pulled the update.  It no longer appears when you load Impulse.

It still appears in my Impulse, at 1.97 GB.  Maybe it still appears if you have already checked before and found it?  Anyway, there is definitely a bug in the system, as the whole *game* is only a bit over 2 GB.

Best regards,
Steven.

I'm sure they'll be back after the holidays and fix it.  No need to get excited.

So tried as you indicated above (more or less.  Had to go a different route to get same effect).  Anyway, when i attempted to boot up Elemental, I still get the same error message about needing to be connected to download something.  :(

If you can't clear that message then the only thing I can suggest is to uninstall the Beta and reinstall.  Don't forget you have to unclick "Show pre-release versions" in Preferences (top left corner button on Impulse "My Games" screen inorder to get back to the non-Beta version.  It will let you reinstall the Beta (1.09n[b].108) after that, if you want to.

On the 'need to be connected' thing.  I've been seeing that with the original 1.09n data patch.  I simply start up the game with my internet connection open, and once I've loaded the save game or chosen my options for the new game, I use the 'windows' key to get back to the desktop, close my internet connection (I like to know that my computer is secure when I'm not able to see what's going on), click on the Elemental 'program box' along the bottom of the screen to get back into Elemental, and proceed to play the game.

I haven't tried to get these followup patches yet though (I've been waiting for resolution of the downloading issues that have cropped up on the Holiday weekend).  I did download a weapons mod, changed the bow stats appropriately and have been testing out the new values.  I'm liking the fact that lesser foes take more than one hit to bring down now - it makes soloing with a Sovereign a little more dicey, hence increasing the need for blockers/escorts.

I am concerned that Bows will not be very effective against powerful/late game foes, but am hoping that we will see some tougher bows on the Tech tree at that point to compensate.  I'd rather see more bow types, rather than having overly powerful bows in the early game.
