We need a hook like Diablo or WoW

a ) Uncommon, rare, unique item drops

Making the same old troops every game: axe-men then mace-men then bow-men, and so on and equipping my heroes/sovereign with the same is getting kind of boring.  I know there are three quests for a special armor, shield, and sword, but let's stop and take a look at Diablo.  It is so much fun trying to find unique sets of weapons/armor.  Can we introduce some rare item drops or something to make exploration and fighting more exciting?

We could do something similar to Diablo and just apply a basic formula of some common weapon/armor type (sword, bow, shield) with some random ability (+1 fire damage, knockback, +3 defense).

Each game could hold one unique set of weapon/armor combination.  That would be a blast to try and find with pieces of it hidden in quests, goodie huts, and monster lairs.

b ) Sovereign/Hero skills when leveling up

The other thing we need is more interesting options when leveling up our heroes instead of just increasing the basic attributes.  Those skills/talents we choose when creating a sovereign could be chosen as part of leveling up or increased as we level up (i.e. brilliant +1 to brilliant +2, etc. ).

I agree that more quest items and more abilities would be cool.  Would make the game more fun.  And I think that items found in chest should be quest exclusive, or items from other factions.  Now all the items, like armor or weapons, are kingdom items.  Also, would be cool if at least every race could wear that special armor you can find.  Stuff like that would be great.  Random quest and events would make the game a lot more fun, especialy if they have unique or hard to get loot acociated with them.

Hmm. Warlords Battlecry. There you could "level up" your main character and keep those levels / points / whatver throughout several "skirmish" games.

And it wouldn't even be hard.  If there was a score system, you'd get character XP for played / won games.
Simply gaining more trait pick points to buy more stuff or buy off disadvantages...
You'd end up with a sov with 60 or more trait points...

Everyone likes to get hooked. Aren't we just begging to swallow the bait? =P

Oh, it probably wouldn't work too well in multiplayer but it shouldn't be that hard to expclude "leveled up" sovereigns from sov selection.
But in single player? Why not?
All it would take is a way to load an existing sov into the sov creator to spend those points...

There could even be... rare loot. Relatively weak magical items (gotta be careful with that = ) that were souldbound and would keep sticking to the sovereign after the game.

I'm a.... going to take a cold shower now hmmkay?

Homm5 had good stuff with families of rare items that gave extra bonuses if the same guy had 2 or more of the same family.

In Elemental, the equivalent would be if the sword and shield you can get form midnight stones each gained effectiveness if you had the other.  Then add midnight-stone greaves, helmet, etc, etc., with bonuses stacking more with each item.

Agree with point b) re leveling.

Good stuff.  Maybe there could be rare schematics to build an exceptionally powerful mace that you can equip soldiers with, or the ability to enchant weapons carried by either heroes or soldiers.  I like the leveling idea too.

One thought, if there were such rare and wonderful artifacts, what if you could choose to either give them to your arcane research to chance learning how to duplicate them, which could either give you the chance to be able to equip soldiers with said items, destroy the item, or perhaps gain a free spell or some research points towards whatever you're working on? Even special building unlocks perhaps?

Just a random babble.
