Is it fixed?

The game caught my eye a while back but when i heard of how bugged it was i decided to wait a while before purchasing it.

So i was just wondering if the bugs have been ironed out enough to make it playable? I loved Sins and was disappointed when i heard about the bugs.

Any points of view would be great and if this is in the wrong forum i apologise!

Honestly I would wait until Version 1.1 comes out. Most of the memory leaks are fixed already, expect some related to Win 7 64 and ATI Graphic Cards (at least I still get them from time to time). I'm not sure thought with the free mini expansions you would still get them, when buying the game that late (it should come out end of October).

You can also read a few forum posts to get a picture of the current state of the game...

Magic 8-ball says:   Ask again later.   (like in 1-2 months)

For me it's playable. I can't even remember the last crash.
However, what the game is missing badly are meaningful choices like... buy the game now and risk the disappointment but get one expansion for free if you buy it now...

Not yet, but if you buy before the patch that is to fix the game (1.1) the second expansion is free.

I bought it yesterday.  I played for 3.5 hours with no lock-ups or problems.  I was on a small map with a limited number of AI opponents and finished around turn 260.  Everything that I have read here suggests that another ~100 turns or so and I would get to start experiencing some crashes.

Anyhow, it is more than stable enough to learn the game and to have some fun.  Since this is PC gaming, your experience may differ from mine.

It still crashes with OOM errors on large maps after few turns in late games.

And no, its neither ATI nor 64 bit nor Vista. nVidia card, Win7.

I just bought it yesterday, too, and had the same experience with about 3.5 hours on 1920x1080 with highest shadows, effects, etc and no problems.  I had been following this game for a while, and decided to finally pick it up with the 1.08 update.  I'm really impressed with the art design and gameplay.

Biggest gripe is the camera rotation and where it the camera is centered, especially during combat.

Biggest like is the unit design and the sovereign design.  I enjoy the customization aspect.

I'm still in no hurry to jump in.

I'll probably wait until the 2nd expansion comes out at this point, nothing I've noticed so far is making me itchy to play and deal with crap AI and ongoing balancing issues.

I feel the same way about Civ5 for what that's worth :p

To the OP: Yes, absolutely.

The game-crashing bugs are very minimal now.  Crashes usually occur well into the late-game and only after several hours of game-play.  I think it's reasonable to expect any PC game to crash a couple times after several hours of game-time/play.  That's on par with most games.

Game balancing is still another story.  There are a lot of underlying mechanics that still need to be tweaked or changed outright before this game can reach it's potential.  However, I will say that the game is still very fun and satisfying as of patch 1.08.

If I were rating the game now, I would give it about a 7/10, which is not bad at all.  It's a good game right now...not great, but good.

Just in case you didn't figure it out yet, you can rotate/tilt the camera in any way you want if you press and hold the middle mouse button.

The million dollar Q for me is this.  I've been following in lurk mode for years on the possibility of a MoM 2.  Found Stardock bought MoM rights and that this game, while not meant as a direct "sequel" in the standard sense, is nonetheless it's successor in some ways.

If you're a person who thought that MoM was the greatest game of all time, and just needed better graphics, multiplayer, better ai, and a more modern computing experience, would you like this game or be disappointed by it?  I'm still on the sidelines as well, trying to decide whether I should put it on my Amazon wish list for xmas or not.  :)

Since elemental is *not* MoM2 I would guess you'd be disappointed if you were expecting MoM2.

As to whether or not you would enjoy it...  Well that's harder to answer.

I think I would enjoy Elemental for about 10 hours in it's present state, and then become disgusted by it.  I'm waiting until the AI is at least improved and the mechanics are rebalanced.  One thing I've found to hate, is when i jump into a new game, only to have core mechanics start getting overhauled as I play it.  Even when necessary, it just irks me that I 'wasted' time playing the inferior version.

*shrug*  to each their own, and yes, that means I typically wait until at least the 1st expansion before getting new games these days.

Stardock tried to buy the rights to MOM, but Atari got all weird on their requirements and pricing for what is essentially (much as we all hate this fact) a dead franchise opportunity.  After that, Stardock decided to go in a more original direction.

Yeah its fixed. Restart impulse.

Nah i'm just kidding. Still can't alt tab and the game is still boring as hell and will be until January when they change the mechanics. Do not buy!

I would say it is stable enough to have a "good time" playing. It will get much better as time goes by. If you know that you will eventually buy it when it is fixed, but BEFORE a price drop, then you may as well get it now and enjoy the freebe's Stardock is handing out for the "faithful" willing to endure a little hick-up here and there until it is polished.

That's why I bought it anyway.

Thank you for your contribution to the thread. Not only did you share your deep insight into the state of the game, but you did so in a mature, gracious manner.

...Did one of the Stardock honey bees sting you at some point?

:waaaa:

Great game but not fixed. Come back after Xmas.

My vote - not fixed by a long shot. In fact, many game components seems non-functional to me (notably, economy and combat).Wait a few months, at least until 1.1

Wait a while longer.

Despite the Herculean bailing efforts by Stardock, it's still an incredibly spartan game insofar as features.  And with the most recent patch, it's become a very tedious game to play (with insanely overpriced sovereign equipment and a potential trickle of resources even late in the game).

I'm starting to regain faith that they'll pull a rabbit out of their proverbial hat(s) and polish this into a true gem, but it's a ways off.

Granted, if you buy now you get a free micro expansion (?) when it's released, but that's also down the road a bit.

You get the free expansion if you buy before 1.1 comes out, so there is some time left to get that bonus.

i may have bought it already, but i no longer find it fun because some of the game mechanics are just bad. i'll persist through the patching process, but i'm not paying for anything until i know that the game is heading in the right direction.

Free expansions are great.

Then again so is bargin bin...

*shrug*  If you think you would enjoy it as it evolves go for it.  If you think it would frustrate you don't.

I play large maps with a lot of opponents, so its no uncommon for my games to go more than 700 turns and I get crashes all the time at that point.  Its still a lot of fun though, but I don't think I can recommend it just yet.

The all clear sign is when they release a demo, or when it hits the bargain bin.  Whichever comes first.

I knew that right away, it just rotates the map instead of the camera.  I do some filming camera work so I want to be able to rotate the camera from its current location so I can create awesome looking shots without going insane.  Like an invert x-axis option for camera and center rotation at camera position option, that way you can fly around the map more intuitively.  Dawn of Discovery had a great camera in that way.

Thanks for the tip though :)
