Watch this space…

Sorry we’ve not been posting as much. Things are moving so fast that it’s hard to keep up.

Some highlights of work this week:

  • Performance is MASSIVELY better.
  • Been doing a lot of focusing on stability.
  • Been tightening up the game mechanics considerably and taking into account the many discussions here.
  • Tactical battles are much better
  • AI is much better
  • A lot better filling out of the tech trees to balance things.
  • A lot of work on the quest system to have the quests and goodie huts be more rewarding

Things we’re still not happy with include but are not limited to:

  • The magic system. This deserves its own post so I won’t go into it. Elegance in a design document can be just work in a game.
  • The UI. We are going to update the UI but it’ll not be in the RTM version but will be in the v1.0 day 0 version. Right now, there’s just too many clicks.

I’ll post more as time permits. Stay tuned.

I'm still confused. Will people who review your game review the RTM version or your Day 0 version?

Thanks for the update Frogboy! Can't wait to see it! You're doing great!

*This thread has been kept updated in the first post of a collection of ideas from the community re: the magic system.

*Spellbook should only show combat spells in combat.

*Spell research should be similar to tech research with the choice of which spell to learn and showing which are common, uncommon, rare, etc.

I haven't seen it mentioned in a while, but any news about skill trees for sovs/champions?

Frogboy said in another post that they typically review the day 0 version (i.e. RTM + day 0 patch).

So hopefully it will just be the pirates that get the lesser version.

I think they review the day 0 version. That's my understanding, anyway.

Actually, reviewers will review a whole mix of different copies of the game, depending on how they got it. Anyone remember the scandal back when a company left a major bug in a version of the game that got "leaked" to pirates?

Turned out a bunch of reviewers had themselves pirated the game and gave it a poor review because they were affected by the bug.

Best bet is to send the reviewers a copy they can download off Impulse, that way they can make sure it's easy for them to get and it's the "preferred" version for them to review, I'd think!

Okay so the game mechanics have been tightened, but what about the graphics on level3?

And reviewers will get the version we have, not the RTM.

good to hear! look forward to more info.

Thank jebus! Has the "out of memory" bug been fixed?

And hopefully I'll finally be getting a framerate more suited to this game than Crysis >.>

i am happy to hear that :) (because i always wondered how people can find the current system fun in any way)

i hope you can improve it considerably.  what you may want to adopt for strategic spells is the age of wonders system .i.e you can use them from anywhere inside your realm. this alone would reduce a lot of unnecessary micromanagement and boring trips with your sovereign around your territory.

I really can't wait. every time i go into a tactical battle, everything just lags HORRIBLY. its fine just up to that point. i had to wipe my harddrive mostly since a corrupt file from windows appeared, probly after all that hard restarting from previous beta's

It's funny you should mention redoing research. Just yesterday I was watching the teaser trailer again and I saw a glimpse of the original iteration of the research screen and I thought "Hey, that looks cooler then the system we have now". At least it looked like it gave the player more choice. Of course it only "looked" that way. The difference was you picked one thing at a time instead of picking a group then picking something out of that group. It research feel like it took longer, which I thought was a good thing. The last thing I want to say at this point is to take a step backwards in design, but it might be worth giving that system another look at. I also had an interesting idea. I'll go ahead and put it here instead of the ideas section since it's relevant now.

Research Specialization:

Basis for Idea: Technological achievement in anything can be made if enough resources are spent.

Game-Play Affect: Chose your research Exactly, being guaranteed to get whatever it is you want, but with a MUCH HIGHER cost. Especially if what you're going after is hard to get or rare research.

In real life, if you throw enough money at a problem it will go away or you can get past it, the only real factors being the time taken and the money spent. Real life case in point, a mission to mars. It isn't so much that we don't have the technology to do it, we do, it's just that in today's economy no government is willing to spend the massive amounts of money it would take to do it.

Use in Game-Play: Choose research category as normal. Then decide to "Specialize Research" and pick Exactly what research you want to work towards. The cost of that research would Quadruple in Cost at the very least, but after the proper amount of time is spent and the proper amount of resources are spent, you'd unlock the research you're going after. With such huge costs players would be very hesitant to use this, but, it could also be used in a last ditch effort to gain a certain tech that could save an empire/kingdom during a loosing war. Being used by a smaller kingdom or a kingdom with limited resources it would practically (if not actually) bankrupt them. Being used by a large empire/kingdom it would have enormous costs and slow down production of units, income of money and other resources, and tie up all research facilities or maybe even you could need to keep the sovereign in the city doing research to be able to "specialize" research. You could also make "Research Specialization" a ability or skill that only "Researchers" or "Scholars" have access to at higher levels. This would give some of those more "useless" heroes a use at mid to late game.

It might be something to keep in mind while redoing the research system and could add a lot of strategic value to the research mechanics overall, but especially mid to late game when getting those harder technologies or researching those really powerful spells really matters. If anything just keep the idea on the back burner until after launch and think about implementation then.

:)

If you really had a corrupt system file it could be any number of things un-related to beta, but may have been triggered more by the beta. It could be bad ram, bad hard drive (or going bad), or just a badly defragmented drive. Not saying it definitely wasn't the beta, but usually things like corrupt system files happen for more complex reasons than forcing a reboot.

EDIT: Sorry I'll post something kind of on topic:

FROGBOY, don't feel bad about communicating with us not as much. I think most of us know you guys are working over time, sometimes over 20 hours a day, just to meet your milestones. As it is you communicate more in one week than most developers do over the entire development of a game. While I refresh the front page for Elemental like 2000 times a day to see if you guys have posted anything new, it's nothing to worry about if you guys don't have the time to. You guys are so humble it's almost sick. It's like your house is our house sometimes.

Almost certainly, yeah. In fact the reviewer could simply be given a code for the game on Impulse and never sent a physical copy.

The community has been wondering why the magic system has not been part of the beta for a long time. For this game, magic should have been very central from the get go, and with the community feedback it is hard to imagine where that part of the game could be.

"We told you so!" :P

Live and learn, eh?

You should check out the show its from, Skins. Their portrayel of two teenage girls in bristol falling in love is fucking brilliant. Though its season 3-4(4 not so much). Season 1+2 were the better ones, but yeah...the way the had naomi and emily get together and the acting. fucking awesome.

Traditionally they review the release version (day 0).

Though, the RTM build will be fine as well but obviously, the newer ones will be better.

We're still tightening them up. We have 2 more games that we have to design today. :)

When do you expect we'll get to try out some of the new goodness. I'm a bit put-off from testing 3c since I'm not sure how much of the feedback I'd provide would be useful at this point and how much of it would simply be: "You're worried about that? We completely revamped that two days ago!"

I'm expecting a week from today.

Yea, Beta 3C is a distant memory at this point for us.  We've gotten a ton of great feedback from the community. It'll be pretty obvious pretty fast after running it that we were paying attention to the beta group. :)

Does this mean we'll get another Beta 3 type build, or will Beta 4 contain more than just the mod tools? I thought from earlier posts it sounded like this is the last gameplay build we'd get until launch.
