Just so I am completely clear on Beta status, I have very recently (today) pre-ordered the game. So will this get me into the next Beta that is due very shortly? From what I have read elsewhere it does look that way. I just want to be sure that I will be eligible to download the Beta and provide feedback and issue information.
You are correct. Make sure you have "show pre-release versions" checked in the Impulse settings.
How does this work if you preordered it through the website and bought the collectors box? No registration for the game is given with the preorder since you aren't charged for it until the game is shipped (just an order number). Is stardock mailing out beta registrations to those individuals or did I pay extra for the cloth map and thereby screw myself out of beta access?
As long as you purchased the game directly through Stardock you are good to go... if you ordered through some third-party site (I don't even know if that was available for the limited edition) then you would be out of luck. With Stardock you always have the option of downloading the game. You'll never even need to put the physical disk in your PC if you don't want to.
Well I have my receipt from Stardock sales...so I ordered directly from them. Also enabled the show pre-release version option. So I assume when the next beta comes out it will appear in 'My Software' or 'My Games'? I also can't register as I don't have a Serial Number either, just my order number.
When I pre-ordered Elemental I got a "Thank you for shopping with Stardock" email with summary of the order (order number, who it was billed to, payment method, cost, what was purchased, etc.). Scrolling down a bit there is "Below you will find information on your purchase" and under that is "Products Ordered:" with Product Name, User Name, Email, Serial Number (for the Elemental game), Download (url), and Download2 (instructions to dl).
Below this is a bunch of instructions.
Check your email, or for another email with the above stuff.
Yeah, but when was that? I don't think the beta is currently open, so recent pre-orders won't get access in an email like that.
Yeah, I think Romothecus is right, I didn't get any access information in my email. Hopefully it shows up in impulse when the beta starts.
They generally open it up to everyone who pre-ordered between beta numbers. Which means you will probably get in when Beta 2 starts in a couple weeks.
Your pre-order confirmation email makes no mention of this? That's strange, if there's no serial number in that email I'd expect there to be some mention along the line of "we'll send you another email when beta opens up with your Serial Number".
From what I remember, there will be another email, but you probably won't need it. I believe it will show up in your impulse(as long as "show pre-release" is checked), and you only get the email with a serial in case that doesn't happen.
Does this mean that if we want to get into Beta 2 we have to pre-order before it starts?
I believe there is also a somewhat limited open window that they take orders before locking it back down.
So if I preordered the game before making my Impulse Account i'd supose that they would eventualy email me the key right?

Make sure when you do make your impulse account you use the same email as you pre-order with. It will definitely cut down on any possible headaches.
Your pre-order will get billed when BETA2 goes live (which should be within the next week or two) - you'll get beta access as soon as your Credit Card is billed. 
so if i preorder say today, would i still get into beta 2?
id like to support stardock as i am a big fan, but can wait if i wouldnt get into the next beta

Thank loki...does anybody know if I will get a follow-on email with me serial to register the game?
I think once they open beta testing they will check the list of those who've preordered. Once selected they will then go ahead and charge you for the game(you haven't been charged yet), and send you a CD key. Am I correct in this?
There's no selection. All pending orders will be charged through and granted access when we open up Beta 2.
