Have you tried leaving all of the game options on default or running in windowed mode? The only way I can get into a game is to play windowed mode as the default kingdom with the default enemies, if I select a different kingdom it just sits at creating world for me as well...

thanks for the reply Fidvo. Yes I've tried windowed mode, default everything, turning off everything, changing res., updating graphics drivers, reinstalling etc... nothing will get me past the creating world screen... However, the game actually refuses to even load past the splash screen when in windowed mode funnily enough.. I've had to delete the app directory files and reset the game to to load the game again past the splash in fullscreen mode..

edit.. i tried again on windowed mode and it refused to load past the splash screen and now after rince and repeat.. fullscreen wont even allow me past the splash screen..!!..

ack.. is this something that is specific to ATI cards or SM2 cards?

Have the same problem here i sended debug.err to dev's Maximum time I was able to run game was about 1 minute.

When I first downloaded .24 it would run for me in windowed mode after I added the SkipIntro=1 to the prefs.ini file. After a couple of days, though, it started crashing after showing the splash screen, and now I can't run it windowed. I've submitted the dump etc to fogbugz. It's not specific to ATI because I'm using NVidia.

Publius - Are you running a SM2 or 3 card?.. thing is, I haven't been able to run the game at all past the creating world screen.. not even for a minute..

I'm running with a NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT.

Sadly I had the same experience on three older computers. So I borrowed a new HP Elitebook and it worked.

To get the older computers to work, I tried updating all device drivers and read a lot of the posts; this made minor symptom changes, but net is that older equipment just didn't work enough to actually see the sovereign on the cloth map for more than 1/2 second. Note these older computers do function with DX9 and have more than minimums listed for RAM. The video card in one was a Radeon 9600 w/256 mb and the CPU an Athlon 2400+. Yeah, old, but I thought it would just run slowly. I also tried it on a Pavilion zv6000 with 128 mb Radeon mobility 200 with CPU of AMD 64 3200, same result.

If the updates don't fix it eventually I'll buy another machine rather than wasting my time on more/different drivers...spent enough time already.

the problem is my computer is new a dual proc... there shouldn't be any bottlenecks with the hardware... the difference between say FPS games and strategy games has always resided in the fact that graphics aren't the overall factor in strat games and thus video req. are not a priority... I've noticed that Elemental has been marketed to this same effect. What is troubling though, is the claim that most comps a couple of years of should be able to run this game but its still dependent on the video req. of dx 9c cards and 9b cards 'should' be able to run them but aren't 'supported'...

that imo is against the general claim that most comps should be able to run elemental/general vid req. of strat games... one of the main reasons i haven't upped my vid cards is because i dont play graphically intensive games that req. sm3 for example... in saying that, a lot of graphically intensive games out there play fine on my card...

I suppose it would be good to know, for im assuming its a video based problem, whether or not i am going to able to play the beta at all and have some input in the short to medium term or if its a problem that will get fixed in the long term or not at all (i.e. req. buying a new card)...?? devs??

Getting the game to work reliably with DX 9.0a/b cards is still spotty and something we're hoping to work on, and I think the actual game stuff is a higher priority. But it'd really be advisable to buy a new card in any case, considering your x800GT is now four generations old and was a budget card to begin with. The compatibility situation is certainly not going to improve with games in general as time goes on.

at least here is an answer to the question and I will be buying a new video card for xmas as I am hesitantly hoping this will fix the problem. I might add however that I still find it somewhat strange that a game marketed as a highly scalable strategy game, cannot run on a graphics card that should be able to run the game fine regardless of age. Even Dragon Age runs fine on my x800gt. Not all strategy gamers, specifically from the old school of MoM, Civ, Warlords etc. need to have a new card. Despite the contrast between beta and final versions, I would think that at this stage of trying to garner beta support, feedback and player development, the ability to actually play the game specifically on the initial low graphics intensive map version would have been a priority..

It's been stated since the beginning of the beta that DirectX 9.0c support would be needed at minimum.

I have *almost* this level of instability (game is basically unplayable, most attempts crash before completing turn one) with a Radeon 4870 and DX 9.0c, latest drivers etc.

Right now the game itself has some very serious stability problems that were not present or not as bad in previous builds.

then again you need to actually read the devs statements on compatibility with 9b.. its one thing to state a solid yes or no but neither had been stated..
