Stardock is pleased to announce the official release of CursorFX.  CursorFX is a free program that allows users to customize their mouse cursors in ways far beyond what Windows is capable of doing on its own.

The default Windows mouse cursor technology is the same today as it was in 1993 when Windows NT 3.1 was released. It lacks functionality and visual effects that are easily possible with any remotely modern PC.

CursorFX updates the Windows mouse cursor engine to support fluid animations, alpha blending, effects, real-time shadowing, user-action mouse states, mouse cursor resizing on the fly, color changing, trails, and much more.

CursorFX is a replacement to CursorXP which only ran on Windows XP.  CursorFX runs on Windows XP and Windows Vista and includes dozens of new features and tweaks over CursorXP.

I believe it works on both equally well though mainly made so it can work wit Vista as well where XP didn't. However I do get shadows which I didn't get before under just CursorXP.
If you have the free CursorXP what have you got to lose by using the free CursorFX?

The Plus feature is a rip off, I mean the only useful feature on it, is the coloring and the resizing. Ridiculous to charge 20 bucks for just that. .

I mean really, I bet if you ask around you will find that most users do not use the special effects and the trails. Most users do not want to be distracted but that stuff anyways.

I think they should include the resize and recolor in with the standard release and ditch the Plus features. Besides there are a lot cheaper ways to resize and recolor the cursors.

But hey, on a lighter note.. I like the FX... I guess I’m a little upset that in order to get the two simple features i would have to fork out another 20 bucks. And after renewing my OD subscription and my WC subscription.. and with the economy falling apart, and the scariest of all we might have a democrat back in office.. who can afford the 20 bucks. If the Dems. get the WH, then nobody with have the extra cash to buy plus, we will have to send it all to the IRS

Could themes which are CursorFX-ready be flagged on the site here, please? CursorXP themes work up to a point in CursorFX, but not with full functionality: for instance, I can't get the dynamic-mode shadow to work with CursorXP themes. Running CursorFX Plus.

Also, I'm getting a sporadic glitch whereby the cursor becomes invisible after applying changed settings. The only way to bring it back is to reboot. Running Vista Home Basic.

What that's saying is that both versions support cursors of unlimited size, not that both versions have resizing functionality.

Try going into the Windows Mouse config (in control panel) and choose any pointer there.  You won't have to reboot.

I did the same on my home computer last night and my work station just now so I don't think it's the computer. Running XP SP2, Windowblinds, RightClick, OD+ & Samurize.......

Sir Zubaz - thanks for the suggestion, but it's hard to do that with the cursor invisible. Actually, I've now discovered that I can bring the cursor back by logging off and logging on again, without rebooting. Just the same, there's a glitch in the program somewhere. I never had this problem with CursorXP.

I figured out a "way" to do it. I opened the file in the "New Package" dialog and did a saveas to the cursorfx format. Then I used Windows Explorer to move the file into the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Stardock\CursorFX\Themes.........

I'm pretty sure that's not how it's intended to work.

Okay Stardock I downloaded this new Cursor FX and guess what all of my Cursor XP themes

are gone and I want them back. I been at Stardock for over four years and I want my old

cursors back.

Hmm.

I downloaded it and installed it on a test machine.

Kinda miss the icon in the system tray. Be nice if it were back.
When I doubled-clicked two themes to install them, they didn't show up.

Hmm.

I'll play with it a little longer, but since I'm not migrating to Vista anytime soon, I'm likely to just stick with XP...

The old cursors are still in the Program Files\Stardock\CursorXP\Themes folder. The new Theme folder location is up in Documents & Settings\All Users... with the rest of the newly relocated stuff. Just copy/move them up there & relaunch CursorFX - they'll be in the list.

Stardock -

I can't seem to get any level of transparency to work with my .curXPtheme files - the Preview shows the transparency, but it does not get applied when you click the Apply button. All the other attributes (size, contrast, trails, etc.) get applied appropriately. On XPP SP2. Transparency worked just fine for .curXPtheme files in CXPP, same rig, same drivers.

I don't like it. It's slower than CursorXP, an the interface is different, i liked CursorXP better. CursorXP have a feature that CursorFX doesn't have, you can reset preview animation in CursorXP. I will be using CursorXP.

I can find the cursors on my hard drive under program files and look at all of the cursor

XP cursors but the cursors will not work with the new cursor FX. I even downloaded a new

cursor from Stardock and the new downloaded cursor doesn't work. The only cursors that

work are the ones that came with the install.

I am trying out Cursor FX.....not sure about it yet. How do I return to using my Cursor XP? Do I just uninstall Cursor FX and would everything revert back to Cursor XP? Thank you.

I take it back - CFX Config loads, I can select any of the cursor sets & make any attribute changes I want which are reflected in the Preview pane but clicking Apply has no effect - the cursor set doesn't change. I had a CXP set loaded at the time I installed CFX (and it's still loaded) - would that make a difference? Do I need to revert to Windows Default through Mouse Properties, then reinstall CFX? No release notes on it in SDC & no prompts or instructions anywhere to do anything other than install it.
