It seems that everyone understood pretty much exactly what I was saying, and yes, you're right. That's pretty much what it's about. I'm not saying that everyone should know everything, but that all "musicians" should first learn the basics, even if they are good without them. Our Jazz band isn't like that, though I often wish it was.
