It's quite likely that whoever approved the box had never actually played the game. There are probably at least two publishing companies between the box and Stardock in this case. I'd certainly give multiplayer a go at least once or twice if it was included. I'm not sure if I would pay an extra $20 for a multiplayer expansion, though. I'm sure that I would buy the base game with or without multiplayer, so the huge cost of incorporating multiplayer into the game for the initial releas

Just FYI, the sequel is NOT going to have multiplayer in the initial release. Stardock has said "Maybe in an expansion," which I'm pretty sure translates to "No, quit bugging us." They just don't believe that a multiplayer feature would generate enough extra sales, over and above the number of people who would buy it without multiplayer, to justify the cost of implementing it. I suspect that if they did reach the point where they were seriously considering making a multiplayer expansio

g to a player who was supposed to go before you, you wouldn't be able to move your ship until the other player had moved his. Probably not easy to implement, but it's the way that makes the most sense in this kind of game IMO.

So, here's to hoping that they make enough money off of Space Empires V to pay off Stardock! And then enough money from their next game to pay the developers of Space Empires V... (I don't know about anybody else, but I never would have heard of GalCiv if I hadn't seen it sitting on the shelf at Best Buy. I bought AP directly, and I'm going to buy GCII directly. So there is some oblique benifit to getting your game on the store shelf somehow.) Incedently, what are th

My philosophy has always been that if someone's going to conquer them, it might as well be me. This applies to weak majors as well as minors. I never saw a point in protecting anybody, unless you count giving money/tech/ships to a weaker major so they can keep fighting a stronger major, hopefully prolonging the war.

I figured out the problem. Internet Explorer was set to use a proxy that was no longer running. GalCiv uses IE's proxy settings, and no other applications I use pay any attention to IE's settings, so I didn't notice a general problem. GalCiv doesn't give any error message when it can't contact the server, and because it coincidentally happened at the same time that I installed AP I assumed it was a problem with the serial number rather than the connection.
