Ugg, a lot of pain in this thread. Did no one seriously see it for what it was? It was very carefully worded to be both suggestive but vague. The fact that they were going to make a future announcement through Facebook and Twitter certainly hinted at the fact that it was a marketing stunt... And they technically were in beta, no matter how stable and polished their site was. I'm not saying it wasn't in poor taste, or misleading
Then there's two possibilities: 1. They think that the lost sales number will be more like 0.01%, which given the cost of integrating and testing a replacement probably wasn't worth worrying about, especially since there wasn't anything during development that did everything Steamworks does. (Reactor is very new, but Stardock could always go pitch it to them.) Given that outside of forums like these you find just as man
Just me reading the supposed, "OMG Steam only release article" But no where does it say that CIV V will be available only via Steam. It says that the pre-order versions can be downloaded early via steam, and that copies purchased via Steam will have a new civ and map included in the game (which considering how much you can mod a civ game is nothing). Oh, steamworks will be included in the game. Whoppity-do. I
Actually, releasing ahead of Civ V was optimal. Releasing a month *after* Civ V would have been a disaster.
I don't see why they would. Steamworks itself is the sales pitch. Firaxis/2k get features like friends lists, achievements, the Steam Cloud save game feature (which is really cool), MP lobbies, and the necessary infrastructure to support it all for $0. You're seeing so many Steamworks games this year because that is a really good deal. Steam also acts as DRM but doesn't carry the same baggage that solutions like SecuROM or Ubisoft do (w
It was mentioned here in other thread that Valve doesnt get a % for a steamworks game sale if the game is purchased on brick and mortar stores. I dont know if that's the case, but if it is it's some kind of boycott to Valve's bottom line. They get no money from it and they have to provide bandwidth for it. SP games should not have this online Steam DRM.
It doesn't matter where exactly the money goe
Meh. If Steve Jobs wants to be unprofessional, that's up to him. It's probably not going to change anyone's mind about him. Since no one is wondering, my personal thought is that Jobs is a brilliantly innovative asshole. Some days, I think that's what Brad is shooting for as well. If Jobs had to reply, all he needed to say was "I'm sorry, but the Media Relations Department responds to requests from accredited members of the media only."
I'm looking forward to Civ V ... I'll probably get it off the shelf when I buy it (especially since there is usually no discount for D2D-style purchases compared to B&M shelf purchases - so I might as well get something physical for my money), and I'll probably break it so it doesn't require a check-in to play single-player (which of course is against the EULA, but I'm evil I guess). A good campaign is a chance to do some exceptional storytelling. A bad campaign is a waste of everyone's time. Stardock doesn't like doing campaigns, so bother to hire/build up the ability to build good campaigns, so their campaigns are bad, so players don't like Stardock campaigns, so they complain, so Stardock doesn't like doing campaigns. A neatly closed loop.
But the book does have issues.
Issues like someone taking time out to write a 'meh' book instead of giving the game a functional AI? I'm partly kidding. About 6-8% kidding, I think.

Stardock needs to do an updated, turn-based version of Pong for the new millenium.
Congrats to the dev team on their hard work. Now - take a look at the photos on your desk. Yep, that's your family. :)
I thought the trailer was fantastic! It makes me want Elemental all the more! What's there to apologize for? Crikey its a trailer! Moreover, the trailer was sent to your email BEFORE RELEASE (how many devs do THAT these days?) AND THE GAME IS GOING TO BE RELEASED ON TIME!!!! I don't require fancy eye-candy to appreciate what is the soul of a beautiful beautiful game, even if it didn't look great, which i
Hmm, so Impulse sent me an email with a link to the Elemental trailer... Now, I'm really psyched that we're just over a week away from launch, but the trailer - well, it's a little blah. It seems to focus way to much attention on the (sorry) fairly minimal graphics, and not enough on the 4X gameplay. And the music is too soothing and soporific. I've had this pre-ordered since forever, so it doesn't affect me personally, but if I knew nothing about Elemental, this t
Angry? No. Personally, I think Bioware has been on a downward trend for the last couple of years. But explain this then. How is "going to four areas" a cliche? It's not. It's just a common element in Bioware games, and a totally arbitrary one at that. You have to neglect large portions of the games to say that there are only four areas in each game. For it to be a cliche, there have to be large numbers of examples outside of Bioware games th
I don't see this overtaking PC gaming any time soon. Bandwidth is the biggest hurdle. I'm playing games at 1920x1080. At 32-bit color depth, 60fps, I'd need 4Gbps. Even assuming a compression rate of 5:1, we're looking at 800 Mbps. That's dedicated streaming bandwidth, not burst. For this, we need dedicated GbE to be a commonly available residential bandwidth option. Internet infrastructure is currently growing at about 20%/year. Let's doubl
That "cliche chart" is such a load of carp. Yeah, I said carp. Stinks to high heaven. Clearly, it's put together by someone with an axe to grind. Why didn't they list having a BioWare screen in the opening credits as a cliche? ZOMG, all their games are so formulaic, they have the same logo in the opening credits! Puhleeze.
It has nothing to do with the supernatural, it's just elementary business sense. There is zero cost to calling the next version of a product 14 instead of 13. At the same time, if even 0.1% of potential buyers would not buy a version 13 product... It's all profit, zero cost. The programmers probably weren't even consulted.
If you can drive a ways, the Grand Canyon isn't too far off. Not a lot to see in California aside from the redwoods, plenty to do, but really not much to see.
Have to dispute that too... aside from stuff mentioned above, we also have Lake Tahoe, which is gorgeous year-round, and a state's worth of incredible coastline. Hearst Castle at San Simeon. Monterey Bay and the world-class aquarium. Big Sur. I could go on, but you get the idea...
As for San Diego, I'd go for the Wild Animal Park over the San Diego Zoo... unless you really prefer the Zoo experience.
But SF is THE best city to eat at on the west coast I'll dispute that. There's a Thai and Japanese place in the Santa Cruz area that I've never seen beat.
Sorry, you're wrong. Outside of NYC, the SF Bay Area has the best fine dining in the US. And some might consider it better than NYC. That's assuming you can afford it though.
