Charisma is not tied to a reduction in champion cost anywhere in the XML files... It could be true, but it's difficult to prove. But it does look like it is tied to some of the diplomatic capital generation techs for the Empire factions.

Armor isn't totally unbalanced at the end of the spectrum. What I think is a contributing factor is that the AI doesn't like to produce many multi-figure units. If you have an armor of 65 and your opponent has an attack of 60, they will be able to deal damage to you, but the average damage will be reported as 0. To the opening post's comment... Leg Armor is better than +1 movement for soldiers. The movement won't help in combat. If you're concerned about movement, get a champion and raise their intelligence enough so that they can cast teleport. (Or, use your sovereign.) That being said, I update my pioneers to wear traveler's boots. They cost a little more, but they get to their destinations faster.

As I mention in my sov thread, be sure to take Cowardly (spell resistance penalty) and Stupid (increased cost of learning spells). Both penalties do nothing in 1.1/1.11, and you get 13 free points. EDIT: Also, please feel free to look at my sov thread (link posted earlier) and comment on anything I've written. I wouldn't mind integrating second opinions.
The volcano spell has a 5-square range. If going to war against an AI who can cast this spell, scout your borders and wipe out any champions you see. It takes a champion with INT>36 for them to cast it (unless their Sovereign casts it).

Intelligence for Sovereigns affects damage from Arcane Arrow (50% INT) and Spell Blast (30% INT). Stone Skin provides defense based on caster INT (25% INT). I usually load up my Sovereign on INT because I use those spells, but you don't have to do that. You only need one champion with a high INT for these spells.
I tried this strategy on 1.1d, and the AI never lowered my mountain or sent boats. In regard to alternate ways to win, I sure hope the AI doesn't try to win by questing or spellcasting. Both ways give no indication that you are about to lose.
if you research some of the adventure and domination techs, you will uncover more goodie huts. sometimes those goodie huts are the lv0 battlefields that generate the midnight stones. but yes, you can end up with no midnight stones to trade. too bad you cannot mug enemy champions and steal their stones...

I hate to say it, but you guys are proving my point. I think the game has strategy merit, but it doesn't sound like it's an interesting topic to you. Fair enough. I could spend my time bashing a game that needs bashed too, or I could leave it to my betters in the vocal minority and instead spend my time finding ways to exploit and/or win efficiently.
