I came across this article on Ars Technica. It seems that for once Windows development is ahead of the competition. Google and Apple will probably follow suit. Security has always been a concern which is why I no longer use any internet mail as a primary account. I do have a Gmail address which is required for my Android phone but it is disabled as it was getting over 100 spam messages a day even though the account is never used.

I should have read this but missed it. Please note that it talks about upgrades NOT updates. On Windows 10 Pro the only way to stop automatic updates is either through a registry hack or using gpedit. Some years back, my old HP was almost dead so I bought a new one. I called Microsoft and explained the situation and asked if they could inactivate my old computer so I could use Windows on my new one. They were so nice and it was a big help. How sad that those days are gone. I loved that Microsoft.

Hi Starkers, How sad that we both feel the same way. I did figure out why part of the mess happened. Microsoft is running "maintenance" at night. I had that set for 9:00 am so I could see what they were up to. They went in a day or two before the upgrade and changed the maintenance time back to 2:00 am. Then they went in and "updated" the group policy editor and wiped out all of my settings. That is how they were able to run the real update without

I went into gpedit and my updates are now set the way they used to be. No downloading and no installs without my permission. Well, Tuesday was a "special" day here when Windows 10 ran updates all on its own at 7:00 am (before coffee!). It took a long time for the update to Windows 10 version 1511 which really concerned me. Why wasn't the hospital running real time backups? They might have lost a bit of info but could have restored most of the data. I would imaging the FBI and possibly the CIA are involved on our end and possibly Interpol as well so let's hop they track down the culprits. It's pretty sad that anyone would stoop so low as to steal someone's health information. You might want to join Krebs on Security as he is an expert at rooting out criminals.
