Are you guys still going to use the idea where you can research three diffrent techs at once? I still think that is a great idea because it would really stop that process where everyone in every game researches the same few techs in the same order. But the other ideas sound brilliant. I like the idea of some techs not being availble in some games. Some element of randomness would be most welcomed. As for situational techs, i think it is a great idea,

Well to me it seems like this will simly be solved by 3 things First, availbility of resources. i.e. Iron ore is far more rare than leather. Second, time to craft and equip. i.e. The time it takes to make plate mail is far longer than the time it takes to make studded leather. Ok so then you designate what kind of weapons your troops will be trained with before training starts, and if you do not have that specific weapon in the storehouse when they roll out then they will use something that they are less proficent at. Or you equip them before they are trained. I am a fan of this idea. It is far more representitive of how armies are actually requistioned. Also I very much like the idea army as being a cohesive unit (not a unit in game terms
