By Feud Posted February 23, 2006 01:03:02 While going for the tech victory today, I found that my neighbor the Iconion Refuge had a class 72 planet in thier possesion! I don't know how to take a screen shot (as everyone will proberbly think I'm lieing), but I made a savegame of it. No mods involved, it was stinking awesome! Max possible is 72. I've seen one old forum post claiming to have encounterd a 72, in DL, when a high PQ planet got doubled, then expanded, then doubled again by random events. I've seen several reports of planets in the 40's. I think 27 is the highest I've encountered personally, though when I think back I did not note the count on the DL planet that showed up late in a DA game I was about to win by tech. I had it spied out and it had a lot. drrider

How about this? A new, one-tech branch directly off of Xeno Engineering called Post-Industrial Waste Management. It would be good for a one PQ bump for homeworlds under PQ 11 only. Cost: about 1/2 to 3/4 of whatever Planetary Improvements costs now. drrider

The fourth major thing that spies do is steal technology. I've had spies bring me as many as 30+ techs over the course of a long game (admittedly, that was a spike in performance, but 15+ is still nice.) Part of the secret is that you seem to need to get High or Advanced Intelligence level on a civ before stealing gets to a useful probability. So what I do is hit each civ I encounter with a series of spies til I get Low Intell, then switch any spies beyond 1/per civ to the next civ. W

In a five on one situation where you all fire at the same time ,surely only one ship from each side would be destroyed (given all things equal same attack defense hit points). It would take a certain ammount of time to retarget the other ships before you were detroyed. Hmmm. In current real world technology, a single Aegis-type cruiser/battle management system can track and engage with multiple types of weapons, from multiple weapons platforms (ships,

Speaking of which, who wants to join my campaign for Earth to become a PQ 11 in the next revision? I think its a pretty good place, all things considered, and all that liquid water...mmm, mmm, good! In context, it hasn't been used nearly as hard as Iconia, or Arcea, or Drengin. Look at Altaria, for goodness sake; the Precursors used it to develop not one but two sentient races, civilization of some sort on it for at least a couple million years, and its a 12! And Toria! - we haven't

Stardock compromised. They made it a PQ 4 planet that can become a PQ 10 with a lot of TLC... as opposed to a standard PQ 4 that eventually develops into a 13 or 16, or a PQ 3 that becomes a 15 or 18. (DA values.) drrider

In terms of Research time/costs, it is slightly more timely to research to Medium Scale Building than it is to research to Advanced Miniaturization ("level 3"), and of course it is much quicker than getting to Expert Min ("level 4"). (Depending on what preceding technologies you consider essential earlier projects for other reasons.) drrider

I understand your position entirely. However, I am forced to say that the SDC interface is clean and fast. My experience with the downloads all through the 1.5x minor versions and multiple downloads during 1.6 beta testing was that it was about the simplest and quickest online updating I have ever encountered. On a couple of weekends during the 1.6 beta, a quick "replace these files" posting of a beta stage was posted, before substantially the same material was scripted for the SDC

By no means. I'm 57 , but if you browse carefully through this thread, and the 1-2 others on related themes you will run across a scattering of fans much older. Oldest I recall seeing was 76. drrider

Yes, there is a printed manual in the boxed Gold edition. "Nice, thick" depends on what you are used to. Its pocket book sized, 96 pages, text print a bit smailler the typical paperback. It will get you started smoothly, and if you read carefully it does identify some of the differences between DL and DA. Note that it is exactly the same as the .pdf version on the disk. AFAIK, neither form of manual has been updated for the accumulated minor version changes since v1.50 (Dark Avatar

Reply #57 Well i tried with both Luck and creativity.... and twice during the game i got popups once it said that by some accident researchers have increased all ship speeds by 50% and the other time it was some thing to do with population.... Neither of those are related to the Luck or Creativity abilities. They are standard random events. Well, the permanent 50% increase to all races ship speeds may be a Mega; I'd have to check the wiki site.<br

Well, every time I've seen it referenced or discussed it's been regarding AI sensor advantages at the highest difficulty settings. If there are sensor advantages at lower settings I know nothing about them. Either way, I'm sure someone will be along to either correct me or back me up on this one in due course. Are you talking about the discussions that the AI seems to be able to see where all the anomalies are? And maybe the resources as well? <br/

It isn't really an argument for taking one tree all the way to the end if you need to be developing something else, BUT excess tp's left from the last project are rolled forward to the next project IN THE SAME TECH TREE; so it is slightly more efficient in terms of tp's to stay in the same tree until you need to work on something else. I usually choose the cheapest currently available line of research WHICH PROVIDES A BENEFIT I can use now or soon. drrider

Moderate pop planets with max money improvements and high tax rates produce more cash than those same planets with high pop and lots of tiles given over to farms and morale buildings. I suggest you limit your farm building so that planet pop never goes above the 13 - 20 range, except possibly on a large PQ planet (11+, for the morale bonus) with 1-2 approval bonus tiles. Then only build morale buildings on the bonus tiles. Interestingly enough, sometimes your homeworld can bec

Earlier, I made the observation that it would be nice to gather information on an enemy without sabotaging one of their tiles. That didn't get any responses, so let me phrase this in the form of a question: Is there a way to gather information on an enemy without sabotaging one of their tiles? If there is, I don't see it. I'm not talking about exploits or workarounds. Nope. You have to place a spy. However, since your aquisition of levels of knowlwd

The third point is a little like what Civ IV does, calculating the percentage of ethnic/cultural makeup of a city. This would be almost entirely aesthetic, having little impact on gameplay, except perhaps regarding research, as the OP hinted at. Its a MOO2 feature, which does affect gameplay in that game. The race advantages per planet type also echoes some features of MOO2 race customization. There simply is (d*** near) nothing new un

Hmmm...Play with slow tech setting. I don't think the AI copes with it as well. At least until you have developed your own preferred strategies / game feel. drrider

You can generally tell the mega events...because you have to at least consider changing everything you are doing for awhile when one shows up. A simple war ain't it; war with EVERY other race is. drrider

1) Either save up spies and place a lot of them on a rival at once, or, just keep placing and re-placing them. Eventually you will get some screens that tell you that you have achieved, successively, Low - Medium - High - Advanced level of knowledge of that race (these levels of general knowledge are just like the espionage levels of Dread Lords). I'm not sure if you EVER steal any tech at Low and Medium Intell levels, but at High, and especially at Advanced, if you maintian one or mor

It is by no means a complete strategy, just a tip, but try setting your spy production to max once you get positive cash flow. Leave it there and forget that it is movable. Then try to put each spy on the most economically or bonus sensitive spot you can find. Farm tile (to crash population), Happiness tile, Tech capital, Precursor Library, etc. Remember that AIs are often operating right on the edge of their financial resources (because their momma was a calculator and they CAN.) Alignment is tracked on a scale from 0 - 100, with 0 being Pure Evil and 100 being Pure Good. The Drengin have a rating of 1, for example (though with the advent of the Korath in DA, Drengin may be more like a 5). The Iconians have an alignment value of 90. Only the Altarians are "gooder". Each moral choice random event has the potential to move the current alignment score by a fixed amount associated with that event, in the range of ~1 to 5 points. Extreme choices on most ev

what we would do in space is exactly what the united states did during the 1800s indian wars. Claiming and patrolling the volumes between colonized systems would be more akin to claiming and patrolling the entire Pacific Ocean after we aquired the Phillipines in the 1890's, seems to me. drrider
