Compared vs. the cost of an influence starbase + all those turns you have to wait patiently for it to flip, I'd say conquering is easier. You're right. The only flaw in your logic is that you have to go to war. With a high diplomatic ability you can flip worlds without going to war, which means you need no military. I do that a lot. I always play as the Terrans, and I've gotten used to the boost in diplomacy, which helps. This strategy probably wouldn't work for the Yor or the Drengin. I love it when it works. I had one game (it was a DL game a while back) where I flipped almost all the worlds the Korx had. By the time I went to war they had a bunch of resource starbases but only a few worlds. My wife will often make funny comments about the game. My wife plays computer Scrabble and checks her email. That's all she does with her computer. My son loves first-person shooters. I used to, too, but my reflexes are going. I'm not as twitchy as I used to be. I'm much grumpier, though. My daughter is a Sims junkie. She's as bad with the Sims as I am with GalCiv2. Anyway, none of them understand my fascination with the game.

The fact that there are several political threads could show that there is a desire for these discussions. I know I'm enjoying them, and one of the reasons is that I'm talking to "family". But every once in a while I just can't stay on the moral high ground. if it were about really defense, the'd do a much better job defending me from the home front, not from halfway around the world. Good point. Imagine how secure our borders would be if we had 25,000 troops stationed there instead of in Iraq.
