Remember that different companies have differing ideas as to what constitutes an alpha and a beta. Some companies only have betas a month or so ahead of release, so what they call 'alpha' stuff is virtually the finished product. Stardock have betas starting much earlier and on a more basic level (so suggestions of the beta testers can be more integrated into the game), while the game is not advanced enough for good gameplay videos yet.

The gamespot one is from over six months ago, the graphics are terrible then (as Frogboy points out) since they had barely started to get going on doing up the graphics (no shadows etc). They will start advertising properly when they have stuff of sufficient quality to show.

The story is simply the background lore, probably focussing more on the time before the game starts. The sandbox mode is unscripted in the same way GC2 is. There will be a technical journal (walkthrough of the alpha) later hopefully

Hortz you are not making any friends here. Your own rant thread got closed and now you are simply taking the same arguments to a different thread, in which the whole content of the thread is a counter to your claim.

This thread is civilized. The other one was simply an uninformed rant (which I felt obliged to troll) which has now got locked. I think that there needs to be a distinction between quality and style. The images released are lets be honest pretty poor quality. I'm pretty glad they are, since from experience if the graphics are up to standard this far before release then they haven't been working on the important bits like gameplay. See Spore.

Fail to you. Those are really early alpha screenshots. They are nowhere near indicative of final quality. Why is it that people seem to assume that a game looks great the moment it is first developed? Read BoogieBac's posts here https://forums.elementalgame.com/358519

I'm sure MP games will have some AIs as well, otherwise the maps will be bare. Makes sense to limit human players though, otherwise games will become unplayable with the lag and the wait between turns. As Frogboy said, they will vary this in the beta to see what works.

1-8 players is human players, nothing to do with the AI. Absolutely no doubt about it.

The Maxis/Blizzard monopoly continues... ETW is better now they've released a few patches. I'm not surprised about DOW2 and Demigod, they've been out for months now, so you'd expect a reduction in sales.

Whiskey is a Christian creationist. I am a Christian Evolutionist. Sound strange? Not really. One way of describing it could be to say that God created the tools by which life came into being. If the world is only 10,000 years old, then why would God deceive us into thinking it was older? Surely a better way would be to create the tools, and then allow it to evolve by itself. I believe it was the Archbishop of Canterbury who, upon hea

Here's my problem with all this: Undead, werewolves, goblins, etc. They seem to be in every fantasy game nowadays. Because everyone assumes that games will follow Dungeons and Dragons lore. These ideas of what dark fantasy entails are so embedded in some people's minds that they cannot consider a game without them. Tolkein's worlds did not have all of these things. No zombies, goblins (goblins and orcs were the same race),

The Mayans did NOT predict the end of the world in 2012. As any good Mayan historian will tell you, 2012 was simply the end of an 'age' in their calendar (BC to AD type thing). There are dates recorded after this (years for holy ceremonies etc), indicating that they certainly didn't believe the world was going to end then. The whole 2012 thing came from someone learning about this 'end of an age' thing and assuming that it meant the end of the world. A

KellenDunk I was referring to the wording of all of them, not just the Tech one. Anyway its about as minor a thing as minor can be.

Multiple research sounds cool. [Gal]Civ annoys me sometimes that I only get one topic to research at once. Love the feel of the UI, althogh I'd probably prefer it if the text on the left read 'Technological Research' as opposed to 'Research Technology' etc.

They do need to update the front page though - it still says June 2009. Otherwise we will keep getting people asking questions like this (although I understand this particular post is related to the limited alpha rather than the open beta).
