I'm a hardcore science geek. There are no realistic strategy space sims, and no realistic tactical (cockpit level) space sims. If you want something realistic, try Orbiter (http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/orbit.html). GalCiv2 is the kind of game you have to meet halfway, and buy into the concept, suspending disbelief (if you're a geek). Learn the game mechanics and see if you can have fun with it.

I think this feature should be added, because people want it, and options are good. Personally, I think it's unrealistic and I probably wouldn't use the feature. Not that this is all that "realistic" a space game, but this kind of thing helps with my immersion and suspension of disbelief. In the growth of a civilization, stars would be named in catalogs long before planets around that star are discovered... let alone colonized. Many of

Yes, that would be nice; a third mode where you only see the faction colors for areas you've explored, or have sensor coverage. Sensor coverage would be more realistic, since the ownership might change over time, after the initial exploration. You could also have it kick in, even without sensor coverage, if you reach a high enough level of espionage with the faction.

Why not just turn off the faction ownership display? There's an icon for that, to the right of the minimap. You might have to turn it off, then save the current game, and start a new one for it to kick in at the game start. I like having that display option while I'm still learning the game (from scratch... never played GalCiv 1). I can hit Ctrl-N at the start of the game, until I make sure I have at least a little breathing room to get sta

I just noticed that bug tonight, where deleted items remain in the lower icon list. I was upgrading (changing) a pre-existing design. I can only reliably delete things by clicking in the 3D screen, then hitting delete, instead of clicking the icon and then delete. There is also a weird bug where clicking Upgrade for an existing ship would show the model as matte white, with no texture map. To clear it, I had to select Done with no save, then

Yeah, the interface right now is pretty clumsy. The window for the actual tree is too small in the default view, and if you go to the fullscreen tree view, there is no info on what each item does. What I'd like to see is just some context on the fullscreen view, like being able to right click and get an info popup, or something. In a good UI design, you wouldn't need two different window options to see the tree and make decisions. <br/

I don't have enough experience in the game to answer the question about the mechanics of sharing designs, but don't give up on your own designs! Start small, and don't try to mimic people who are spending LOTS of time in the ship design editor to build these hyper-developed ship concepts. There is great satisfaction (for me, anyway) in coming up with a design that isn't copied from someone else, even if it looks a little.... er, funky. <br
