Did the game become harder after the newest patch or what? Having played and done quite well against 7 Gifted opponents, I now constantly struggle... On research and economic ends mostly. This is a good thing, definetly, but far as I saw it didn't say in the changes "made AI alot better"

You cant attack a planet with ships. Planet Bombardment gives you the options of what attack to chose when landing your troops, for example MassDrivers, Core Detonation, Information Warfare and such.
Yes, I have a similar problem. The music and FX volume constantly changes for me during gameplay. Usually it takes for me to go into the diplomacy screen (or do any action that changes the music) and the sound becomes barely audible. Then a while later, it suddenly starts blaring again. Annoying.
Usually I have about -100 credits income per turn until I research advanced trade and set up the routes. But it's easy to compensate for that if you sell your technologies to the AI, especially to minor races. That way my balance is about 2000 and even if for some reason I suddenly cant research a new technology and sell it before the offers, I still have a "cushion" of about 20 turns.
Specialization all the way! Haven't play the campaign yet but finished a couple of maps on Painful difficulty and I've got to say specialised planets work best for me (althought I usually have huge problems with cash until trade routes become well developed). Anyway I usually turn my first planet into a "mix" but with a slight focus to production. On
There's a certain "glitch" in the AI at the Intelligent level it seems. The computer civilizations keep giving me their starbases as means to help me in a war against a certain civilization. Which is quite ridiculous, since the starbases they give me are usually very well developed, not something you'd give away to a rival just like that...
