I just won my first 2vs3. I saved on game start, tried it once, got owned, learned from my mistakes, re-loaded and won. It was still a fairly close call with pirates constantly harassing one my worlds, but I spammed beam turrets like crazy and it was effective, letting my fleet concentrate on one AI at a time. Once I get 10 carriers I can win most battles fairly easily. The AI seems to underestimate their power. 3 squads per carrier ! + a lot of illums, of course. I never even

The game is definitely more CPU-bound. Try to find a situation where the framerate isn't good. Now turn off any graphical options you wish. You're not going to make it perform much better. The game lags on end games with large number of units because managing all that crap is CPU-intensive.

So the manual says about culture : "When an empire‘s culture is strong enough, a planet could even revolt and become neutral. You can‘t colonize a neutral world that has revolved due to an enemy‘s cultural influence until that influence is reduced. In addition to planetary effects, each race can unlock special bonuses to its ships stationed in friendly culture." What are those special bonuses ? I looks like the manual doesn't mention them

You don't need to go through a worm hole. If the distant star system is visible, just send your ships there like you would do with any other planet. If you haven't explored it yet, go to your star and from there you can jump to distant stars. Of course, you need to have researched distant phase jumps or something like that.

I suppose Colored Skyboxes were added for their potential "wow" factor and that they help units visually stand out against the background, but I personally can't stand them. I bought this game as a space strategy game. Space is pitch black and dotted with stars, not lime green with dense clouds or sky blue with a white horizon. It's just way too implausible. Some comparison screenshots : Normal space color: <a href="http://img17.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot7la

I tried three times already and can't win a 2vs3 on hard. Me and my ally play Advent, our adversaries are TEC. A few things in the guide just don't seem to apply to my situation : 1. The guide recommends to kill capital ships quickly, which should make the AI flee. In my experience, that doesn't happen. Either the AI flees right when I arrive, or it fights to the death (usually mine). When the AI doesn't flee, it usually has 20 carriers and as many hoshikos, and I just can't kill t

It has been said before, but Sins feels cheap for featuring no campaign yet presenting the player with three different races and some backstory in the manual and introduction cinematic. Sure, it was done on a limited budget and I'm glad the money was spent on polishing the most fundamental aspects of the game, but aren't your pockets full now Ironclad ? 14th best-selling PC game of 2008 isn't that bad. [e digicons][/e] Then, the voice-acting is so-so. "No ledge acquired" says th

I hope Ironclad makes a lot of money out of Sins, enough at least to make a Sins of a Solar Empire 2 or some other strategy game. I'm very impressed with Sins of a Solar Empire, and at the same time the game is obviously not all it could have been with a larger team and budget. I can't wait to see what Ironclad can do given a lot more $$$. Next time, give us a campaign, flesh out your backstory, make the voice acting more convincing, and try to get the balance bewteen units a bit closer to wh

The game is on hard. I just added it to my original post, thanks for the question. The support army you suggest actually represents about 50% of my main fleet, and 100-150% of my capital ships (I have only 2). If I could have that army sitting at Inari with several repair platforms, I would definitely be in better shape. I have been constantly building ships at two different planets over for the last hour, and yet with all the battles I have waged (I repelled yellow several times alre

Last night I’ve played a 2vs3 (EDIT : on hard) and surrendered after about 2 hours. I’m wondering what I was doing wrong that led to my demise. Here’s an overview of the situation, a few minutes before I decided all hope was lost : http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/4885/sinsofasolarempire20090zj5.jpg Teams : Advent (blue and green) vs TEC (yellow, orange and red). I’m blue. My ally is almost dead, with one pla

I was playing a 3vs3vs3vs1 on a large map the other day, and while I was busy destroying the main fleet of of the AIs, the "You win" screen appeared brutally in my face. Well, yeah, I won! But why ? I've searched the manual.pdf file that comes with the game, and the word "win" cannot be found inside. "victory" yields one result, doesn't answer the question. What are the victory conditions in Sins ? Thanks.

Ok did the 2vs2 again, this time I rolled all over the enemy AIs! However I think I forgot to check team locked, so my ally turned against me at the end. And he had about twice the fleet I had. Oh well.

Thanks for the tips. Re-tried a 2vs2 on hard. I played a better early game, but at some point the red guys had made like 50 cobalt frigates and 2 capital ships + 10 javelins so my proud army of 10 LF + Akkan + 3 carriers + 10 LRMs went down pretty quickly. I tried as the guide explained, to make very well defended choke points, but I just don't get time for that. Trade ports, yes, but they're damn expensive ! With 700 credits I can buy almost 3 LRMs. Also, pirates can attack anywhere

Ok I will have plethora of noobie questions having read that article you linked to : When he says "build taxes", he means upgrade civilian infrastructure right ? At the beginning, buy 200 crystals, for what ? A light frigate is, for instance, the Cobalt Light Frigate, not the Javelin, right ? When he says "create a fleet out of [your capital ship]", what does that mean ? Capital ships can create fleets ? What are "escape facilities" ?</li

Hello, I'm currently trying out the demo of Sins of a Solar Empire. I read the manual, did the tutorials and yesterday I won a 1vs1 on Normal, on the first map, Balance of Power I think. It was way too easy. Each time I got my fleet to a planet, the AI fled because he had less forces. So there was never a single difficult battle during the game and I won almost with my eyes closed. I was never attacked by the pirates. I didn't have to research any technology aside from 1 or 2 points for incre

Yes what happens is that individually they look good, and I can make them look not too distracting (although, beauty should be distracting), but as you explain, LogicSequence, the game likes to patch them together, while that's not what I have in mind when creating them. The easiest way around this is to reduce nebula density to something very low, and put star density reasonably high. Now you have a sky filled with stars, and here and there something worth looking at. It's a completly di

I completed four additional textures this afternoon. I was bothered with my nebulas contrasting too much with the background, like pictures glued on it (which is really how it works, but you don't want it to look like that). So now I am working with much more transparency. This way I don't have to reduce brightness as much, and they integrate much more seamlessly into the background. I'll post screenshots as soon as possible, the new ones are absolutely beautiful. Performance-wise, usin

DrAsik - what I would suggest is just work your own files. Ther'es no need to create dependancies on Logic's great work. Just create it as an independant project and if someone wants to use them they can plop them in the \\My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar\Gfx\Space folder. I didn't even know you could do that. But this seems to be the easiest way, yes. Now however, when using my textures in conjuction with DS's mod, you get a mix of very detailed textures and b

I would like this mod to be a stand-alone replacement to the original game textures, and in case LS's high-res mod is installed, a replacement to both the original and his nebula textures, while keeping the rest of his textures. I'm working fast and have created nine new textures. Hopefully I will be able to test them tomorrow evening.
