Now I have made several html files with dreamweaver, registrated a domain and setup a host.

So what to do now ?

How do I publish them ?

How do I use FTP ?

Your host should have information on how to upload your files to the server. There should also be information about the ftp server your data is stored. You can take this information, say (ftp.wincustomize.com l:mylogin p:mypass), and create a new site in Dreamweaver (Site > New Site). Follow the prompts and enter in all the relevant information, i.e. where it's stored on your hard drive.

One of the screens will ask you how you want to connect to your remote server. Select FTP and place the information you received from your host in to the appropriate fields. Once you have completed all that, your Files panel (on the right side of the screen) should be updated with all the files in your site (the folder you chose as your root directory on your HD). There is a button that says “Expand to show local and remote sites.” Once you click this button you will see two panes. One is your host’s server and the other your HD. After you connect to the server (the two plugs icon), just click and drag your files onto your server.

Some hosts have a folder in your root directory called "HTDOCS" (or something similar). All the files you want visible to the public go into that folder (index.htm, the images folder, etc.)

If you don’t want to use Dreamweaver to upload your files, there are many free FTP programs that do similar tasks. I hope this helps.

the last time you posted, i had the impression you'd used dreamweaver to create a site on your local drive. now i'm getting the feeling you may have simply created a couple of html pages (notta problem, but if you began by configuring your site, all you'd have to do now would be enter the url, check the connection and, if it worked, begin uploading).

if you didn't configure a site before you began doin your html pages, open dreamweaver, click on the help button and select the tutorial. go step by step thru the process of creating a site. by the time you've finished uploading one page of the tutorial sample site, you'll know what to do and how to do it.

don't forget to post the url to your site here when you've got it working.

You have to put a file called index.htm or index.html in the root directory for the site to load. Whatever you want the homepage to be, rename it as index.htm. I'd read some tutorials on the web or on Dreamweaver to figure out how to get things going.

You hosting provider may require you to use "default.html" instead of "index.html" depending on what type of server set up they are runnning.

I would suggest finding a book on dreamweaver if that is what you are going to use for constructing and publishing your web pages. There are several good books out there. There are also tutorials on Macromedia's website. (or is it Adobe-Macromedia now?)

what's your domain name? (it don't appear to be studio52.com) or the dns numbers your host provided.

while the 3rd party dreamweaver manuals have their selling points, the tutorial very adequately covers the basics of creating, populating, synchronizing and otherwise maintaining a remote/local site.

i've used every version of dw except for the newest one (dw8 i think) to create and maintain a dozen separate sites on an equal number of locations (at various times). its site manager utility has always worked very well for me. i use ws-ftp and flashfxp on occasion for pc stuff other than site stuff i've built using dw/fw; if i'm using a mac, i'll use transmit for the same purpose.

I think it's Adocromedia. Or Macrodobe.

The best way to figure out what to do is to just do it. I've found that reading the books is tedious and I get a lot more out of figuring out things myself.

If you're still lost, contact your host, or see if they have an FAQ. Usually your host will have some basics of starting out on their site.

Now that I look at it, you have a lot of other people's work on your site. I hope you do have permission. I don't really see the point of developing a website only to use other peoples work.

there are some some problems whit the placing on the text.
in safari and explorer for mac os it ok,
but in opera and explorer for windows the text is placed wrong.
when I made the site I had to place it wrong in dreamwaver to get it right in the preview in safari.
why is that?

and the site IS stil under construction...

Citizen Gloss  ...it appears you have walls/themes etc originally created by other people available for download from your site.

This is called 'distribution' and is in violation of implied and inherent copyright law, unless...

You have prior consent from these authors to display/distribute their property.

If you do not have that consent it is VERY advisable that you remove the content from public access, if for no other reason than not to inflame the ire of your fellow skinning community members.

It is irrelevant whether the site is 'under construction'...or that this may only be a temporary situation for 'example'.  The erstwhile distribution is not condoned....

Gee, any bets on how soon he finds out that the skinning community isn't big enough to hide from those who's work he's decided to pilfer.. Bah, who cares.. We helped him, he decided to show his true colors and I'm sure we'll run across him at DA or some other skinning site. We must be sure to say Hi! Afterall, we know where his site is and we know who he's ripping off, he has given credit after all..

If I knew you could just steal other people's work, I wouldn't have spent so much time on working my site.

Speaking of which, I'm making a new layout. Think Stardock will mind if I 'borrow' the Wincustomize design?

Who cares!! According to Gloss all you need to do is put some text on there that says 'under construction' and you're covered!! Problem solved, and you're right, it'll save you oodles of time!

Credit is not sufficient.

Violating the copyright of 'fellow' skinning community members will see you ostracized from that community.

It's also salient to note that most skinners are members of ALL the alternate skinning websites so your reputation for 'taking without consent' will precede you.

I'd STRONGLY suggest a rethink of your procedure.
