How do you play "good"?

I've been trying my past few games to play a "good" empire, but I've failing miserably. How do you do it? Every single one of the events ends up screwing my empire massively - for example, that one with the critters in the water causes an empire wide -16% morale!
The only way I've found at all successfully to do it is to play evil at the start, and then work towards good later.
