Howard Stern, Sat Radio and obscenity - get over it already!

Note to Jack Thompson - blow it out your you know what....

Some people might, just might, be surprised that I'll offer an opinion here, and they might find the opinion I'm offering counter to what they would expect me to normally put forth, but I'm gonna offer the opinion anyway and also offer comment space to those that share or wish to contradict the opinion.

In recent days, since the debut of the Howard Stern show on Sirius satellite radio, there's been increased discussion that Stern may be facing new, unplanned, censorship from his bosses at Sirius. For example, there's this Newsmax.com piece linked here, or perhaps the New York Post piece linked here and somewhat echoed in a discussion on FOX News with Neil Cavuto who brought on a so-called Stern expert who was (according to Stern) anything but....

Stern himself addressed the issue on his show and/or on his "Howard 100 News" show, which has continued to be filled with material related to possible censorship and/or the hopes of people like Jack Thompson to pull the reigns back on Stern.

Jack Thompson has talked up the possibility that Stern and/or Sirius could be charged with breaking Obscenity laws in various parts of the country if Stern airs 'the type of show he has promised'.

Note to Jack Thompson and others like him - get over the Stern fascination already. He's gone from terrestial radio. You can't get his show unless you pay money to get it, and if you have money to pay to get the show, you are most likely an adult, or at least a fairly mature individual. While it's possible that someone other than those that are the intended audience might stumble across the show and potential expose children to the show, it would be an individuals responsibility and not that of Sirius or Stern.

Thompson apparently has a stick up his rump in his efforts to force Stern completely off the air -- including satellite radio. He holds the same hatred against Bubba the Love Sponge, who he had previously driven from terrestial radio. Apparently the man doesn't know when to gracefully accept victory, and now he's pushing for more.

If there is a god, hopefully Jack Thompson will suffer a massive coronary while sitting on the toilet with a stack full of the nastiest porn or other obscene materials so when the authorities come in and cart him off to the hospital they can find enough questionable materials to lock him in the pen. for quite a while.

I begrudge no one their moral values, but (I think this is somewhat like Gid's thoughts in this area) I don't need anyone else pushing their moral values on me and I try very hard not to push or mandate my values upon someone else. I may discuss and debate such issues and topics, but I don't tell someone they have to do what I want. I hope to show them the right choice and then let them make their own decisions. Apparently that is something that people like Jack Thompson can't do.

So, one last time, Jack Thompson - get over it. Move on. Get out of the censorship business, we don't need it, don't want it, and would rather you go away.

I could agree with you more Terp. I dislike Jack Thompson for so many of his positions... and I am glad that another adult agrees.....

I dont like Howard Stern or his Shock Jock type of show.  And you know how I protest it?  I dont listen.  That is my right.  For those who like him, more power to you and enjoy.  I do not see him being sensored, especially since he is on the radio equivalent of HBO now.

I didn't say I liked him Dr. Guy, I just don't like Jack Thompson and others trying to tell me what I should and shouldn't be able to listen to, watch or play AS an adult. I am fully capable of making my own choices.

That's my take as well. I salute Dr. Guy for exercising his rights in the proper manner here. If you don't like Stern, don't listen. I'm not really a fan of Stern either, though I checked out his show for curiousity sake since I had a Sirius subscription that I just cancelled following the end of the NFL season (at least the end as far as my team was concerned). Since I still had the subscription for a few weeks, I figured I'd check out Stern and see what the show was about during his debut period.

I don't find Stern that entertaining. Some parts of his debut shows were funny and/or interesting, but for the most part he's like a lot of other noise on the airwaves, and I'd rather listen to something more informative or more entertaining. Music, perhaps, or Sports Talk.

I do not need the likes of Jack Thompson to decide for me though. I am perfectly capable of doing my own decision making. If I hear offensive materials on Stern, Bubba, Ron and Fez, Tony Kornheiser, Tony Snow, Bill O'Reilly, or Rush Limbaugh or a host of other programs I can simply tune away from that content.

I've protested in that manner in the past, virtually wiping WMAL AM 630 (News talk) off my dial. They canned one of their talkers (Michael Graham) because of statements he made that equated large portions of Islam and the Islamic religion with hatred towards the U.S. and the rest of the Western Culture. When he refused to take back those words to a level acceptable to station ownership/management, I stopped listening. His comments could have been taken by some overly sensitive individuals as offensive, and certainly CAIR (Counsel on American Islamic Relations or whatever their name is) took them that way and rejoiced at getting him fired. Again, it was WMAL's right to fire Graham, it was CAIR's right to protest, and it's my right to stop listening to WMAL because I don't care for management's actions at that station.

Apparently Thompson and company aren't willing to be satisfied at getting what they wanted originally, and that is the part that I think is just dead wrong. Again, stop telling adults what they can and can't say or listen to (or watch, or read, etc.)

I dont disagree here.  I know her is raking in big bucks for Sirius, so there are apparently some who like him.  And as it is a subscription service, I cant see it as any more than a nuisance suit.

Then again, Jack Thompson does do a lot of things which sort of... make him look less than stellar as an ally(comparing foes to Hitler and Stalin comes to mind), or threatening people who are having an electronic conversation with him with legal action for "harassment".

While it isn't the most "balanced" source at the moment, I do think the Wikipedia does give enough info to show that Mr. Thompson isn't really someone that should be taken as seriously as the media makes him appear.
