Need a utility to organize my music files

i have used musicmatch to do this ..you can set it to create exactly what you want folders by artist, then a seperate folder for each album, but it does this when ripping from my CDs, so it may not work if you have already ripped the music

Yea, that's what Windows Media Player does as well. Need something to go through my existing files. Going to have a look at that link Island Dog gave me.

Well thomas, depending on how much music you have, you could do it by hand. Just sort by artist, move into folders, then sort by album withing the folders, move into more folders. Just an option.

Winamp's got a pretty good library function as well. I'm like CJD though, I've "explorer" sorted all mine into My Music/"Artist"/"Album" or misc.mp3

Manually sort my 9GB of music... *blink* ... *blink* *blink* ... bahahahaha! ... aah... *phew* ... you really are a loone JD, and I love you for it.
I did that once upon a time. When the collection was small and humble. That was before the Great Idea of stuffing all my music onto my computer, but not really ensuring that it was copied in a nice structured way. Hey,... WMP seemed to find the files allright. Then, when desided to go for an exploration trip in the nice little park named Music, I soon realised it was a jungle *scary fanfare here* ... and I found my self lost. *sneaking scary music*. So I desided to flatten the pesky vegetation with a highway! *muhahhahahhaha!* (*doing a Dr Evil gesture with the pinky finger*)

(Offtopic: One good reason NOT to get up at 7 o'clock; it's bloody freezing! ... and way too early ... all though, for some reason I found it easier to get out of bed than when I usually get up. I think it's because my brain didn't realize what my body was doing. It's slowly catching up and the warm comfortable bed looks more and more attractive.)

I would use media monkey, it'll search you hard drive for media files and categorize them, it even has a built in player

That's actaully what I ended up using. It worked very well.

i've used media monkey - it works really nicely as does iTunes (i have over 20gb worth of music and those were the best for me to use! iTunes is really easy for organizing. media monkey only gave me troubles a few times were it wouldn't change a few files, but other than that it was great. good luck

I noticed Media Monkeys got a couple of quirks when editing tags. For instance when I edit the tag info directly in the media list it doesn't stick.

As for iTunes,.. I'm just a bit apprehensive to try it out. I've heard to automatically takes over the file associations without asking. I just don't like software doing that. I was actually looking for a while the other day trying to figure out how to install Quicktime 7 without getting iTunes bundeled. Didn't like that either.

When you install iTunes it asks you if you want it to take over file associations.

It;s from sourceforge.net. They make Audacity and a lot of other free stuff that works well and is easy to use. This is their Mp3 organizer project.

I have found the managing your songs in a program is just too complicated and frankly I don’t trust the programs. Instead I am now going through and putting all my songs in folders and categories. I have also started adding metadata to filenames to help with searching for files and creating “views” based on my current listening mood. I have well over a hundred gigs of music and have hand sorted most of it over the last 2 years believe me its a project... but I don't trust anything else

I agree with Cerebro & 511b. Once you've got it initially sorted it really doesn't take much to keep it organized. I use WMP to get all the info and then just move each folder into a master folder for that particular artist.

I used I-Tunes to put all the songs in the right folders then uninstalled it. I use MediaMonkey to keep up tags and sort my collection. I have the paid version and like it a lot. Only problem is, like so many other programs is the memory leak that happens when you use it for five or six hours. Sometime as much as 50 to 75k. So I use foobar 2000 to play songs. Around 7 to 10k without any plugins. You know, whatever works.
Still looking for that perfect player/Organizer.

Since I posted 2 years ago I've come to rely on a couple programs.

Still use Winamp Pro. I tried Xion but couldn't tell any difference (audible) and I've got a lot of customization in Winamp.

I like the Godfather a lot better than MediaMonkey for file organization/management, although mainly I use it to rename files based on ID's also do some batch tag editing with it.

dBpower Amp for tags and converting. It hooks into Windows Explorer and gives you the entire ID tag info on mouseover/right-click. You can edit tags right in Explorer and convert damn near any format to any format. Well worth the cost.

2 years... and I still haven't gotten my collection sorted. it's only grown bigger...

I use Tag&Rename ( WWW Link ) in conjunction with WMP11 and find it to be an excellent solution for music organization.

Only problem is that I've for the last week had WMP crashing on me. Claiming that DivX has caused an error. It does that even when I've replaced any trace of DivX. ...
