Opera vs. FireFox redux

I,ve been using FireFox for a while for WC, mainly because of the downloading ease on FireFox vs. IE. Tried Opera when it became free a while back but there was some conflict with posting on forums. That seems to fixed now. I've been having a lot server to busy, slow loads when switching threads, and timed outs. Decided to give Opera another try today and what a difference. None of the above problems. I tried a couple of downloads and they seem to work just like FireFox. Defaults to whatever program is called for, only tried IP so far. Brad mentioned that 25% of people browsing WC use FireFox so this probably has something to do with the slowness I've been experiencing. Different paths maybe? I don't know much about how these things work but so far Opera has cleared a major irritation for me. On dial-up. One weird thing though, the main page for forums doesn't update at the rate FireFox does. Hit more on any of the sections and they are updated. Another edit, now FireFox is just as fast, maybe it was a time of day thing. I'll keep testing to see if there really is a difference.

The biggest difference between the 2 is that Opera is MUCH, MUCH more configurable or maybe the word is CUSTOMIZABLE than FF. Even the page updates you speak of can be tweaked in prefrences.

i've used both, and always switch between the two for various reasons

guess just depends on how i feel lol i think both are pretty good to use

ObjectDock - Access shortcuts and frequently used applications from an animated dock.

I've found Firefox and Opera to be equally useful, each has its advantages, and both can be slow to update forum pages at times. It's good to know that they can be refreshed in Opera with preference tweaks....shall have to look into that.....thanks, Lantec.

Dunno if this helps, but mostly, when I have problems, the ass I need to kick is right there if I bend over in front of the mirror.

I had this problem too. So out goes Opera. It's easier to just use SDC in one VD and WCB in another VD, that way I can check or post at two different places. I don't think it matters what you use, though, at times it's just like waiting for the grass to grow while a page is trying to load. I tweak the hell out of my stuff, run spyware and all that to no avail. When I used IRC (long ago), there was a nice proggy called PIRCh that you could do neat things like bully your way into a chat room. Kinda makes me wanna shoulder block when I wanna see lots of skins in a little bit of time.

Bichur, if you mean the white page when you open Opera that doesn't seem to have a way out, no go button, click on the home icon, go to Opera home page, click on Opera Portal in upper right corner and it gives you a Google type page like FireFox. I fumbled around a bit before I found this.

On my machine Opera is faster than Firefox 1.0.7, but today I've installed FF 1.5 RC1 and the Fasterfox extension. I've switched to "Turbo" mode, and really that's what Firefox is now: turbo fast.

Even faster than Opera.

What I miss in Opera is a real ad-block feature. Using the filter.ini excluding ad-URLs does not work well. The Adblock extension in FF is still the one and only.

No, I mean I have WC set as the home page, I open Opera, WC shows the boxes for signing in...I fill in my info and password, click go....the page submits, comes up and shows the boxes to sign in, I do, click go, the page shows the boxes to sign in....excetera, excetera.. Excetera.

Bichur, I didn't think I really knew what your sign in problem was, but that's not unusual, when it comes to computers I'm usually not quite up to speed. I try to keep everything as simple as possible. Don't make home pages, I never log out of WC, so when I go to WC from where ever, I'm auto signed in. Hopefully Opera won't switch me to non-subscriber pages in the middle of a session like FireFox has. I'm going to keep using Opera until I figure out whether it's browser or server related.

I'd swear when I first got Opera (during the one day free, before it became free) it let me sign in. Now, it's like nothing is happening. I don't know if while trying out the customizations, and what not I screwed something up.

Any suggestions, anybody?

I've had that happen to me on more than one occasion, on both Firefox and Opera. However, I put that down to a server error rather than something to do with the browser in use at the time. Now, after reading this, I'm not so sure

It'd be nice to get to the bottom of it and save having to refresh the page, if anyone has any ideas

Yep.....not using my 'pic' would help.....scaAAary stuff, you know, and more than enough to make any browser/throbber wanna go hide.

I haven't had any problem, but there have been a couple of updates since your install. I suggest uninstalling & updating

In this instance, I'd recommend the beta, but definitely uninstall & reboot if you go that route.

aimzzz....thanks for the link to Opera 9.0 beta, and the advice to uninstall and reboot first. That's my next job, and hopefully it resolves the issues for everyone.

Opera is the best, but I still use FireFox more and it will probably stay that way because I like the easy of installing plug-ins.

I don't know of Opera's customibility, but that would only make Opera better by leaps and bounds instaed of just leaps.

sir bichur, just tried opera (encouraged by you all). i did end up with the login issue (i was trying to use my account data, and next thing you knew i was not logged in - even though i remembered just loging in & saving my account info). i went on trying to relog in, to no avail. finally, i selected to accept "direct" (not 3rd party) cookies and to be able to store loging info in cookies...
worked for me, hope that helps.

by the way, you've all made me a new opera convert! i had been having heeps of troubles with "xxxxxxx server is taking too long to respond" and similar errors. i got tired of reporting "broken websites"... i just wish flashgot was better integrated into opera.
