Your favorite movie of all time is.....

Having gone and seen Serenity twice over this weekend (and enjoying it immensely each time), I'm left thinking about what I would consider my favorite movie of all time.

Several possibilities for me, incuding Star Wars (A New Hope, the original Star Wars), Goodfellas (Pesci was so delightfully bad in that movie), Top Gun (cheesy, but enjoyable), and a batch of other films that I could list, including some old classics, some classic "war movies" with John Wayne, Clinton Eastwood, and others (including The Dirty Dozen, Kelley's Heroes, and others). I should also include the Indiana Jones movies (which were excellent), many of the Bond classics, and more.

I really enjoyed Serenity, and think it was very well done. But I don't know that I would say it's my all time favorite. Close I think, but when forced to choose I'm gonna go with Star Wars still. It launched SciFi as a truly effective genre for big screen movies. Yes, there were other big SciFi movies, including 2001 and a few others, but the amount of money that Star Wars took in set records for success. The marketing of figurines, light sabers, laser pistol toys and other similar items taught the world that having a tie-in to a success movie can do wonders for your industry.

Anyway, I'd like to see other peoples choices for what their own favorites are. There's no right or wrong answers, it's just your opinion, but it may help a bit if you explain why you feel your choice should rank as a favorite.

Yes, I did watch the series, all the way through, and then was seriously mad and frustrated when they didn't air the final episodes they had filmed. I got the DVDs as soon as they were available, and really loved the unaired episodes on the discs. Even better was that the DVDs showed the series in proper order, not the seemingly random order that FOX made them air it in.

If you saw the series in order it really was so much better, so much easier to follow and probably would have been a hit series. Because of the show that was picked to air as the series premiere, many viewers were turned off of the show before it really started.

The "Train Job" was an ok episode, but it was too confusing if you had no idea of how things came together for the crew. You were left questioning what the heck would a spaceship be robbing an old western style train for?!? With six shooters, shotguns and old style weapons even. Everyone expected Star Wars or Star Trek style lasers/phasers and there weren't any in the first episode, or at least not enough.

Serenity seems a lot like Sports Night - a series that was too good for TV, and deserved better. At least Sports Night had a longer run (not long enough, but longer). I liked that series a lot too, and was sad when it was cancelled. Again, one that didn't get a fair shot at building an audience. Sometimes the networks are just too damned impatient, and other times (I think) they are far too patient with crappy shows (like Big Brother for example).

"O Brother Where Art Thou?" currently tops the list. Other favs are "The Princess Bride", "Labyrinth", "The Fisher King", "Braveheart", "Casablanca", and "The African Queen".

Raising Arizona is my favorite comedy......Nicolas Cage..........."Hi they got more babies than they can handle, don't you come back here without me a baby" Silly but I love it.
Officer and Gentleman is my favorite drama ..........."only two things come from texas, steers and queers and you don't look like no steer" What a bigoted statement but great flick.
Favorite scary movie, Scream.
Favorite Christmas movie.....It's a Wonderful Life....Clarence Rocks!!!

Some interesting choices Infantry Wife, and probably the best way to deal with the question, break it down into some categories.

I forgot to list a few other favorites of my own, but some of the respones help to remind me of them.

12 Angry Men (the original version) is great for courtroom drama. So is A Few Good Men ("you can't handle the truth!").

Officer and a Gentleman is a great flick also. Again, one of my favorites.

I love It's a Wonderful Life. I too think of it as a Christmas movie, though it's creator/director never wanted it to be filed in that category and originally it was not (by my recollection of the story) a success. Over time it has of course become a classic.

Raising Arizona is a great quirky comedy. Originally I thought it was dumb and didn't enjoy it much, but over a few viewings I grew to love it. Now it is a favorite.

I still love The Magnificent Seven, and also really liked Silverado. It was a great movie and did a great job of helping to jumpstart Westerns as a genre that could do well at the box office.

Glad you got to see the flick MM. I caught it twice, once by myself, and once more with the family. Great both times, and I was happy to share the experience with my wife and kids.

I hated the loss of the characters also, as I had the emotional attachment to them from watching the series. It was a blow for sure.

Oh, a couple of other favorites started coming to mind last nite. I was watching something on the tv when the music from Bridge over the River Kwai came on. I don't much care for the movie, except the very end of it, but then again, it's not something I hate either.

For a few brief seconds, my mind id'd the music as from The Great Escape, and that is most definitely an all time favorite.

Comedy: Three Amigos

Romance: When Harry Met Sally

Drama: A Few Good Men

Action: Hunt For Red October

Christmas: A Christmas Story with It's a Wonderful Life as a very close second. By the way, it should be sacreligious to own any Christmas movie, you should HAVE to plan having the whole family sit down at an appointed time near Christmas eve and watch together on TBS. Hey, the commercials at Christmas are great!!

I don't know where The Godfather I and II go, but they are so good that they should have their own category over which they eternally reign supreme!!!

Saw Serenity this weekend...it really was a good movie...however I kept waiting for the girl to DO more....

Sci Fi is showing Firefly on Friday night at 7pm...is that the series you were talking about? I haven't seen it but now am anxious to see it. I think the movie will bump up ratings at least.

Thanks for recommending Serenity, it was totally worth the $6.50
