Random thoughts about the Research Anomoly...

If the concept behind the Research Anomoly (RA) is that it's old tech left behind by some ancient race, shouldn't the results of exploring a RA be random?

Meaning, if it's just stuff floating around the galaxy what are the odds that it just happens to be what you are currently researching? If it was a random technology that you don't have, and not too much more advanced than where you are now (i.e. no more that two techs removed from what's available to research now) wouldn't it be more realistic?

Good idea! I'm all for more randomness in the game.

Yeah I meant to mentioned that also. Plus maybe it is because I'm playing the level right abv cakewalk but these RA events are not rare enough. They gotten to be so common that I will research the hardest thing that I can find knowing that I will run across a event.

They are also far too unbalancing at the moment as you know to go for them and can recognise them. They should be changed to be a random amount of research towards a random technology. Much less useful, but still a nice bonus. Tying the maximum value to 10 times your current research values would also make them scale in usefulness throughout the game,

totally agree with all of you.I don't like them at all in fact. I have gotten to the stage now where i rarely develop anything with more than a few months investment as i go anomaly hunting instead. Its a bit arcadey that bit-perhaps some of the subtleties you guys suggest would make this aspect add something to the game - definateley more randomness and less powerful.

The thing is, they tend to be the only way to get to the end of a game with an all-Avatar navy in place. Unless you have a LOT of time on your hands. Of course once the Excalibur class ships are implemented that will change things a lot.

:sniff!:

I wish there were a few negative events like booby trap explodes damages ship for x hit points. or you do a space version of the barbarians in civ. or they get trapped in a time warp and can't move for x turns, or just vanish and don't return.

On the positive side i would like to see the anomalies add unique items or ships that cannot be researched. I would also like to see varying amounts of money for asteroids, and maybe instances where you don't get anything.....

Nice Tylan, imaginative stuff that would add something. Enhancements could be quite novel and subtle so as I dont end up with mega-research ships so poweful from picking up space junk that they are almost unstopable.

DaveO - can you point me at the thread/source of data on ships (such as Excalibur) I have not seen that stuff, sounds exciting

Getting really whacky - what if exploring a wreck found some mumified remains of a long dead race with their rib cages exploded open from the inside....and some strange looking egg cases......!

that would be some interesting minor race!

We will have negative anomalies eventually. The suggestion on randomly increasing a tech somewhere in the tree is a good idea.

Discovering an asteroid should initially cost you X credits to send a mining team to it. It should then cost you Y credits over M months before it starts to return Z credits for R months after which it will be exhausted. You might also be able to trade the mining rights to another race to cash it in for a smaller total value than if you had run the whokle development deal. You might be able to invade another races mining facility, whereupon it would cost you maybe half as much to replace their mining team with your own and continue operations. Defending them with a starbase or other weapons placements.
