The lone soldier

This poem was written at a time of great stress in my life, though it is not the best I have written flow wise, it is the one I treasure above all. My values shine forth through this unknown hero. Many untold tales are out there, and many unsung hero's, this is to honor those hero's though they may never be known.
On a field a lone soldier stands
All his companions, in the final sleep
The soldier's tears flow into bloody hands
Weep for the loss my friends
His grizzled face is narrow with sorrow
There is no hope to be found for today
Perhaps there will be some tomorrow
Weep for the loss my friends
The dead, like stars are scattered
On the field so laced with blood
Why? the cause had not mattered
Weep for the loss my friends
Standing for the country true
The armed force of a nation
Those brave and perilous few
Weep for the loss my friends
Stand and salute those who gave their lives
Who gave up health and home
To protect their countymen, children, wives
Weep for the loss my friends
Yet on this field a lone soldier does stand and salute
The companions of that final charge
The battle just fought makes him resolute
Weep for the loss my friends
And finally he falls, as the wound takes its toll
Last thought of peace victory
He hears the cry of freedom, to final drumroll
Weep for the loss my friends
The field now is empty of life
Though the dead are as the stars
Empty of the killing and the strife
Weep for the loss my friends
Many children, fatherless cry
For the wound this war has made
For the country, a disparing sigh
Weep for the loss my friends
Freedom is worth any cost
And any cost man will pay
So for your freedom, respect the loss
Weep for the loss my friends
Yours sincerely, Tim Lyons
