If America is serious about getting off foreign oil why don't we get tough and start restricting sales of these gigantic SUVS that guzzle gas? They have become so popular even as gas has become higher and higher some only get like 12 miles to the gallon.

The less fuel efficient they are the higher tax they should be hit with each year until it hurts to own one of these things.
I'd go so far to say that if it is a new car and get less than 15 miles to the gallon as a non-commercial vehicle
then they should be outright banned.

Those SUV's are a staple of American business and the US economy as a whole. Your suggestion is unfeasable. On the other hand, think of how much fuel the war and occupation of Iraq is guzzling. You complain about the SUV's in the US, but ignore the real gas guzzlers. Humvee's and armored vehicles. Not to mention the Blackhawk helicopters and the B-52's and Stealth bombers...In that light, SUV's are a grain of sand in the big fuel-guzzling sandbox.

Maybe the last three comments came from proud owners of SUV's. I have to admit, they're really cute-looking machines, and I had my eye on some awhile ago.

Thankfully I never bought one...what with the astonishing gas prices...and the lousy mileage some of those vehicles get.

I've often wondered why people could continue to drive these clunkers around with the gas prices being so outrageous. What's the fun of having an awesome vehicle like that if you can't afford the gasoline to use them for long, indulgent drives across the country, across challenging terrain...travelling in luxury, elevated just a notch above everyone else's heads.

No, people drive them to work in bumper-to-bumper traffic, take them to their homes in little cul-de-sacs, and park them in their paved driveways. Probably wincing all the while their clunkers guzzle up all that gasoline...one gallon...glug, glug, glug...two gallons...glug, glug, glug...

I haven't read it, but all this talk of banning sure is funny. To it I say:

In all seriousness though, reflecting on the pitbull thing, I recall when I was four years old, a pitbull ran up to me in my neighborhood and proceeded to attack me. His owners sauntered over, lightheartedly explaining, "Aw, he's just playing." I did not find it amusing.

Reiki-House - The US war and effect on gas is worthy of it's own article, but please stay on topic for this one.

My main question is I guess, How did we get to where we are now with all these gas guzzling SUVs running around?
I hope gas goes up to 4 bucks a gallon just to wake up the drivers / buyers of these unrealistic machines.

You don't have to ban them, as fuel prices continue to rise sales will drop for them drastically. Just like the oil crisis in the 70s, we're going to swing back to smaller more fuel effecient cars. I wouldn't worry about it really.

The government shouldn't be able to dictate to us which cars we are and aren't allowed to own. I say let the market discourage SUVs naturally.

I disagree with an SUV ban. Although they are impractical for probably 95% of the population (I know when I see one, my first thought is usually something along the lines of "stupid yuppies"), and guzzle a lot of gas, there is still that 5% who need them for various activities (particularly if they have a large family, it can be a practical choice), similar to those activities that require a pickup truck. The best way to fight this problem is with hybrid technology to reduce the environmental burden, and a good dose of common sense (people asking "do I need an SUV? Will a car/minivan do?")

i would never buy an suv because i hate paying for gas. but the best way to curb the selling of these monsters is simply let the idiots who buy them pay for the high gas prices that run them.

with all the comments here, I wonder, does anyone or has anyone ever heard of using vegetable oil as fuel for desiel engines? how come we don't just switch to desiel?

will it take THAT much to change pumping station to pumping vegetable oil and desiel engine mass produced?

You also might want to look at where US oil comsumption goes. I think you'll find SUVs aren't a substantial use of our oil imports.
