GalCiv switches back to desktop at startup

Hello everybody and thanks in advance for the help...
Problem:
Whenever i try to launch GalCiv, it starts to load apparently ok, but then it switches back to the desktop before getting to the menu or to the intro movie. A GalCiv tag stays on the bar but when i click on it it the screen goes blank for 1 sec then gets back to the desktop. I suspect the multimedia stuff is the problem.
The story so far:
Downloaded and played GalCiv ok for a few days, but I realized that i had no music nor pics nor movies nor anything, so i used Stardock Central to download the 336Mb worth of media. It installed and it never ran. Please note that i did run before i installed the media.
I can provide the debug.err script, if it is of any help
