Movie Night in Iraq

What? You don't like watching Atomic Documentaries?

Privacy is a quaint notion here but for the most part we try and allow others as much of it as possible unless of course they have just gotten a package from Amazon! DVD’s are a big deal here in Iraq since our main opponent on our safe little base is crushing boredom.  Folks here will crowd around and hop up and down like little kids waiting for you to open up your new trove of movies. This also leads to a great deal of DVD swapping and borrowing and yes on occasion, even theft.

Not a problem for me folks. Nobody wants to steal my movies… A partial list of my current movie library here in country:

The Day After Trinity

Crusade (entire season (I’m a sucker for Peter Woodward))

The Atomic Café

Choke (Rickson Gracie)

Bullshit! (seasons 1&2 (ok occasionally the enlightened few ask to borrow this))

Nuclear 911

The Atomic Bomb Movie

Cadfael (all 13 episodes (Calangelo and I are the only fans)

The Name of the Rose

Jeremiah (great but no one knows about it)

UFC 49 & 50

Hook and Shoot Revolution (Serious MMA Women’s Promotion)

Red Dwarf (Seasons 3 & 4 (updated thanks to Arquonzo))

Typically I just get odd looks and occasional murmumrs of “You’re weird dude…” when I open my Amazon boxes.

Dude, I swear you and my husband are kin to each other somehow.  His movie collection that he took to the desert with him looks a lot like yours...

Kudos on the Cadfael.  We likey too....

The only item on that list I recognize is Red Dwarf... wow

Definitely one way to ensure your movies never walk off!

Im sad to say Red Dwarf is the only title I recognize as well....by the way on movie night, do you get popcorn?

Bullshit! and Crusade are excellent. You should force those on people.

No Feebles? And you mentioned it in another article recently...

Grey, if I was there, you're MMA titles would be on permanent rotation with mine....I've got a dozen or so titles...UFC, Pride, etc. etc.... I live on that crap now...

No Feebles?

Not yet anyways....

Peter Jackson should pay me a commission.

Looks like Amazon is doing it's part of the war effort! Your movie fare looks a lot better than ours was back in 90-91.

When we were in Iraq we had a total of 5 videos...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Jewel of the Nile
Coming to America
Grease
The Seventh Sign

I would have killed or died for a few selections from your list!! But I'm curious, with the running theme that seems to permeate your selection, the film, "Dr. Strangelove; or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" seems suspiciously absent. ;~D

I already own it but it was left behind with the vast majority of my collection...

All that, and you forgot Day After Tommorow, like....dude, it's ya know, the best movie evvver man, tooootally. or like, oh my gosh,
what about fight club??? it's like, some art film or something.....

Hmmm.....you are bringing back most of those right? And by most of them, I mean the "Bullshit" and "Red Dwarf" series, "Name of the Rose" and....thats it. Tossing your "Wiseguy" and "Shogun" sets have been pretty tempting but I figured that would be a one way ticket to divorce so I didnt. Love ya.

Yes I will be bringing them ALL back and subjecting you to them at some point

Tossing your "Wiseguy" and "Shogun" sets

Those are classic television!

Yeah, I'd be careful with those. I was there when he bought Wiseguy... He might try and claim it's some sort of irreplacable German edition (available not in Deutsch, but only physically in Germany). I enjoyed it, he was just consuming the episodes at too fast a pace for me to keep up (similar to the way he downed the German beer), and once I was behind my interest dwindled. But he had to watch *something*, since he had finally finished his umpteenth viewing of Knight's Tale.

Well, he forced both of those on me and my response: sleep. As is the result with most of his other "forced" attempts to watch his stuff. Although, I do have to give him props for forcing me to watch the SG-1 series. As much as I tried to fight the urge to watch it, Jack O' Neill and his gang of stargate travellers won. Well, actually, it was mostly Jack. He's kinda hot for an older guy....

And no babe, they were not classic television. I would use those DVD "Classics" as you call them, coasters for my drinks. Hmm...good idea.

I just watched The Atomic Cafe for my documentary graduate course at NYU. It was really interesting!
