Okay. I'm sick of game crashes. Help Please...

Alright. This is really starting to try my patience.

I bought Galactic Civilizations a few weeks ago and I have been unable to play more than one and a half games of it because of these bloody annoying crashes.

Can anyone help me here? This is a lil outa my league.
The game isn't crashing in any one defined spot. It's just crashing. Sometimes frequently, other times not. It will crash in a variety of different places, yet never in the exact same place.
The cursor dissapears and the game just returns to the desktop.
Now I'm wondering if I've done what they said right. They said a direct X version of the game would cause it to crash - and to install the latest Direct X out there. I've done that. Nothing works.

...Help? ;_;

Have you patched the game? Out of the box its pretty dicie . . . ? Apply patch 1.05 and 1.10 (Download at Stardock Central) and see how it goes . . . disregard my reply if you already have . . . good luck.

Most consistent crashes are caused by conflicts with video or audio drivers or codecs. Updating sound and video drivers often helps.  If you have bad codecs on your system, generally SmartException will catch these files in its report.  You can install it from the Free Stuff tab in Stardock Central.  Then send the report to me at [email protected].

Also try running scandisk and disk defrag to make sure that you're not developing any bad sectors on your harddrive.

If you don't have write access in the directory where Gal Civ is installed, GalCiv will crash whenever you try to save.

If you installed from the CD, make a shortcut that points directly at your galciv.exe file.  The flash menu creates a sound buffer that usually doesn't close before Gal Civ starts, and that can cause problems in DirectSound.

Run Dxdiag to make sure that you're not getting any errors reported from DirectX.

E-mail me if you have any further problems.
