Maryland my Maryland.

A tribute to the University of Maryland Terps. Who ranked #14 were upset by the Northern Illinois Huskies last night. Sung to the tune of O'Tanenbaum

Oh who's the one who's bubble burst
Maryland my Maryland.
Oh the Huskies showed who was the worst
Maryland my Maryland.

N. Ill is such homecoming fodder.
Yet they are the terps daddy and father.
Oh who's the one who choked so bad.
Maryland My Maryland.

NIU - ah, one of my many alma maters. The Huskies are the pride of DeKalb, IL. Right behind the town's other great contributions - American standard barbed wire and Cindy Crawford.

They still have a football team? I mean, after LeShon Johnson - their greatest all-time player - spent 2 years as a backup running back for various NFL teams and would up pumping gas in Topeka or something?

Next is a tale of crime and greed. I am fit to tell it for I am a long time native of the region. For many long years, over eighty if I recall, there has been a great battle every year between Washington State University and the University of Idaho. The campuses are a mere nine miles apart, and it is more like a high school rivalry than college football, for it is the Battle of the Palouse.

This year the epic game was moved over 300 miles away to the Big City, Seattle. An evil place with $25 parking and no where near the heartland which is lentil country, the Palouse. I have no grudge against pro teams moving games or even franchises, for they are paid mercenaries. They play the game for pure profit. Move the Seahawks if one likes, I care not. But this sacred game I speak of is college football. These are student athletes. The emphasis is supposed to lie on STUDENT and not athlete. I can give a rats arse if the gate was over 50,000 in Seattle and only 20,000 in Martin Stadium in sleepy ol' Pullman. Where were the students this time? Why did they have to drive hundreds of miles and pay fee after inflated fee to show their school spirit in Starbuck City rather than at the area schools they chose to attend? Sure, one could watch the game on TV, but this is supposed to be college football for college students. These students had a right to an affordable game that had taken place in their own backyards for eighty-odd years. The sports elite could have easily broadcast the game from Pullman as well as Seattle.

This is nothing but injustice and greed. The old tradition calls for the student officers of the losing team (the UofI Vandals most of the time) to walk nine miles to the winner's campus to wash the feet of the winners. For the teams, the universities, and the placid consent of the student bodies to sell out the game for a few bucks is a crime. If I had my way, I would make both teams and both sets of student representatives walks to the big city of Seattle to wash the feet of the fat cats of college football that allowed this greed fest to take place.

What's next? Is the Apple Cup (the seasonal football game between the University of Washington and Washington State University) also going to be corrupted and only be held in Seattle instead of alternating to Pullman every other year? This insults the very core of amateur athletics. Sportsmanship, fair play, school spirit, and tradition all sold for a few million dollars. The NCAA is a sham and we all know it. They should just stop trying to sell this whole notion of student athletes complete with elegibility, scholarships, majors, and every other trapping of "college athletic life" and just buy and sell these players like they were already in the professional leagues.

OK, end of gripe. Gerakken will return to a more normal mode for now. Normal until high school games are corrupted by big money somehow as well...

GO HOKIES!!! GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE!!!

Kit, are you a Hokie? I live about an hour from Blacksburg. I actually got accepted there, but I didn't go. But to tell you the truth, I'm not a Tech fan.

Go Cavaliers!! UVA fan here! :CONGRAT:

Gerakken: The Washington St, Idaho game was played in Seattle for one reason. Both teams must recruit in Seattle to be successful.

GO HOKIES!!! GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE!!!

Yeah think they can beat James Madison? What's next Mary Jane's preschool wheelchair acadamy for the blind?

Oh I see that's their last game of the season. :)

Yeah, they have a pretty tough schedule this year...

Central Florida
James Madison
UConn (yes, they have a football team! LOL )

At least they did schedule Texas A&M as an out-of-conference game. But since this is the last year the Big East is going to be considered a decent football conference, it should be a real laugher.

Lets face it Theoden. The Big east was nothing but Miami, VT and a bunch of wannabe's. It's a basketball conference that tried to dabble in football. And that is what cost it. Dabbling, rather than jumping in. The ACC was nothing but FSU and a bunch of wannabe's. Then when FSU dropped off it became a joke. Next year, the ACC will be a legit BCS conference. And I am so happy it happened on the arrogant Big East's commissioner's watch!!!

Ah next week will be good. Miami vs. Florida & of course ND vs. Wash. St. I just hope ND's offense discovered how to score this summer. ND plays USC in midseason. That one is going to hurt. USC looks incredible and they killed them last year,

I gotta agree! The ACC still has a long way to go to compare with conferences like the SEC, etc. but the addition of Miami and VT gives them a boost.

You know, it's funny how the ACC still doesn't get much respect, even though Maryland, NC State, Virginia, and Florida State are Top 25 teams (well, not Maryland anymore! LOL )

Wash st is not all that good this year. Especially on the road. They have a D, but without a genuine O, I don't expect much out of them to be honest.

NC state is notorious for easy scheduling. I guess their coach was drunk when he scheduled OSU. Uva is ranked? sheesh what are they thinking?

Notre Dame doesn't have the firepower to stay with SC. Better hope for snow and lots of it. SC's D was not only physically impressive, they didn't get out of position all night. Fundamentally very sound.

Never count out WSU outright. We have a tradition of screwing up the big opportunities, but also sometimes of turning around the impossible. I think this will be the case with ND. WSU can overcome ND if we go about "couging" it, as we call it. I'll make my drunken wager at WSU by 3 over ND, no matter how misguided that may seem in practice.

By the way, I am still sort of sore over the WSU vs. UI game taking place in Seattle. That was a fine example of the temple moving to the money changers.
