Guppies and more (guppies)

I recently wen't to a pet store and got two guppies for my daughter. I have two dwarf frogs, one is a bore, and the other entertaining. But for some odd reason I wanted to keep myself busy with fish tanks and fish. I never knew that visiting the pet store would give me about forty or more baby guppies. They are so cute. I have birds,I can play with, I have a dog I can play with but I lacked having something to take care of. I feed my dog and birds every morning. Walking the dog a few times a day and changing the cages a couple times a week really wasn't a big deal. Now I have the job of changing water every other day in three tanks and as it is adding on the work load I feel blessed for those little bitty creatures depend on me. My daughter took over my dog except for the taking her out part(that's moms part along with filling her bowls with food and water) but it's still my daughters dog. I figure since I know so little about guppies thet this will be a trial and error deal. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I don't mess up and can see some of the babies as adults.
If anybody at all has suggestions on taking care of babies etc. Please let me know. My husband loves to knock my interest and I would love to prove him wrong on this one.

I haven't even thought of guppies in thirty years or so! I remember having them as a child. All I remember is that it's imortant to give the babies a place to hide because they are cannabalistic. Good luck and thatnks for the memory!

Darn, I was going to say what shovelheat said.

I remember the joy of guppies when I was little. I remember having to buy some green plastic thing that looks like grass so the babies could hide in it.

Good luck and happy guppy parenting.

They are cute. I purchased a 10 gal. tank for the babies, but read on the internet that they can start having babies as early as 4 weeks old. I had never until this had any guppies, Only oscars and goldfish (but heavens, not together). I remember the green thing it was kinda round. You don't see them anymore. I had to do alot of searching just for the olden day filter ( that you use that cotten stuff in) since also reading not to use the outside the tank type. I purchased a breeding net and it has plants that connect to the side so when the mom that I have now has her babies I can just move the babies to the 10 gal. tank. I figure if I can do well with these in due time I'll try and run a strain of one type. I had one man tell me if I want to do that to toss out( throw away) the ugly ones and the ones that dont have the color that I want. I'm like sure I'm gonna do that, suppose us as humans were tossed out because of the way we looked etc.? I'll just have to put the pretty ones in a tank and the not so pretty ones in a tank and get a think that seperates the girls from the boys, Or make a room a fish room one. Who knows what I'm gonna end up with.

They don't need a huge tank but definely seperate the colorful ones, (the boys) from the dull ones and hope you didn't miss one or the other.
If you miss one female, no biggie since the little ones just mean one less feeding that day.
Mollies are really easy to breed also, just don't breed bettas in a small tank with any other fish, or Dad will attack them.

When they are so little how can you tell what is boy and what's girl? I heard that mollies were easy but they aren't that pretty. I wouldn't mind giving a whirl at breeding egg layers but really doubt it would be bettas. I read that male bettas are very protective of the eggs falling out of the bubbles or whatever you call that that he makes. Would love to try oscars one day. I can say my eldest babies are 3 1/2 weeks old now and they are all still alive. I kept out the gravel and all and am just using the old kind of filter and a foam like filter. I do a 10 percent water change every other day and feed them three times a day so I hope thus far I'm doing things correctly.I do hope that no more babies come for awhile other than the new female having hers. I was told sooner or later I could become overwelmed with the amount of fish, But who knows. I was also told that they can have up to 100. One of mine had 9 and one had 11. I couldn't imagine a gup having 100.

While we're on the subject (well kinda sorta) does anybody remember buying those little green turtles way back ?

There are some marble sailfin Mollies that are quite attractive, not the plain bug-eyed black ones. The sunset type will have up to 10-20 babies at a time; we bought a pregnant one! They were snacks for the Cichli=ds in the tank.
