If the folders don't exist or are empty, then the files are gone. If the files are present but things don't work, then you may have to reinstall the associated programs. Maybe the registry references were broken. It is best to do a clean install, meaning, wipe the hard drive. Then, you won't have these sort of problems. You just need to back up your important files.

You know I had that problem and I used this program from stardock to help me find out where all the files where on my computer. I forgot what its called though... but it was very helpful in me finding the files and moving them back to the original places.

I got it!!!

Drivescan! It works well and you'll find those files, especially if the folders are large in size.

If someone did something like that to my computer, I would wipe my hard drive and start over(making sure that I backed up all my important files first of course). Reason being, if your registry is really messed up, your system might crash one day while you are working on an important project. Then, your system won't start at all. Of course a restore point might save you. Then, you'll probably have to reinstall all the programs after the crash. I just like my system working properly without the possibility of it crashing on me just because someone mucked up my system.

Also, if someone reinstalled XP on your system, your previous windows updates are screwed too. It sounds like you have a big mess on your hands.
