What's the point? Why have the site at all?

What's the point? Why have the site at all?

I don't often bring this up but I sometimes wonder why we even have this site. I get considerable hate mail every single day because of this site.

Someone didn't get a wallpaper accepted. No idea what the wallpaper was since I didn't moderate it but I get called a Nazi or worse.

Some other guy's network connection isn't working and can't access their skin for some reason so naturally we deleted it because we're "assholes".

And don't even get me started about the people who run into the 50 megabyte limits. You can be assured that for every guy who posts something here, I get 2 emails about it explaining why I am personally a putrid human being.

And I've had days where I get called a "fucking Nazi" and a "blood sucking Jew" (I'm not even Jewish) for things ranging from not "doing something" about the ratings on the site or some comment on some skin that I didn't remove.

And on top of that, this site costs a fortune to run.  The ONLY reason this site is remotely possible to keep up at this point is because of the generous volunteers who run this site day to day.  The admins and moderators who, I might add, often get treated poorly and without any kind of gratitude.  The other variable are the people who SUBSCRIBE to the site.  I.e. pay the $20 for 2 years.

One of the few pleasures I get out of the site lately has been to write about things that interest me.  I realize that some people don't like "blogs".  Or me ranting about niche developer stuff.  What does a PC user care if some obscure Mac developer is getting screwed over by Apple? Why should I keep "whining" about it? It doesn't affect Stardock one iota. If anything, it helps Stardock by taking out a potential competitor.

But I can't even do that without people bitching about THAT. Sure, those people don't know about all the crap that I and others have to put up with on a daily basis because of the site.

But then again, neither does the egomaniac skinner who sends me the nastygram telling me how I'm a parasite on the backs of skinners for working to make customization software.  And the "artist" who sends me a 10 page email insisting that other artists like him should be getting a "royalty" off of every WinCustomize subscription because it is really THEY who matter.  THEY, their ART is what makes this site run and for me to even suggest that developers, moderators, or even users fit in is a demonstration of my "arrogance" and "ignorance" of the circle of life that is the skinning community. That guy doesn't know about the crap we go through either.  Not that he'd be interested.

Right now, what's really helping keep thigns going besides the wonderful people who moderate this site and the users gracious enough to purchase WC subscriptions is the IT team working full time to create the next generation WinCustomize.  Their hard work and tireless devotion to trying to make something really special helps keep the excitement going.

But to those who feel the need to email me telling me that writing non-news items is a "waste of their time" or "yet another example of your petty egoism" or are just "lame rantings", I say to you: Fuck you. Of those who have emailed me, who have accounts, NOT ONE of them has a WC subscription.

Most people dont' seem to have a problem with editorials. And those who don't like them who have posted on the message boards have been at least constructive about it. I have a LOT more respect for the guy who publicly writes their views than the coward who just sends hate mail from their anonymous Hotmail or Yahoo or whatever email account spewing venom at me.

But I'm not having fun right now with this site.  I look at the bills (hundreds of thousands of dollars a year).  I look at my inbox.  And I ask "Why? What's the point?"

Sorry if I sound a little depressed. I think everyone has those days once in awhile.  And I'm having one today.

Hmmm, not sure what to say that hasn't already said by everyone else here. This is a great site, and I have enjoyed reading your posts. Maybe you should buy a punching bag? take out your frustrations with some of the losers, and get some exercise at the same time!

Yep.... all the good stuff wot they all sed!

You have mail Mr. Wardell. (No... most definitely not nasty mail )

I, on the other hand, try to send appreciation mail to developers. You got one from me last week, Brad. I guess they're not all that common though, since mine made the news. There are lots of satisfied customers though, just remember that. Most of them are just unaware how appreciated their being good customers is, and don't think to let you know how much they appreciate the site and your company's other services.

I guess this is why most businessmen eventually hide behind "operatives" as they become more and more in the public light. *sigh*...

Albert Schweitzer once said "One truth stands firm. All that happens in world history rests on something spiritual. If the spiritual is strong, it creates world history. If it is weak, it suffers world history."
Someone else said "It's hard to soar with eagles when you work with Turkeys. Keep up the good work, Brad, and keep your spirit strong. All of the decent people appreciate you, and the knuckleheads, ...well, they're just knuckleheads.

Brad,
you're of course doing a wonderful job with the site. Children will be children and will always assume there is someone getting more than what they are. Those are the whiners. do what us mom's do. IGNORE em! eventually you will only hear the good stuff coming thru.
please continue to blog , editorialize and do the great stuff you do. for every one whiner, there's at least 10 or more of us who WANT to hear what you're saying and who WILL support the site both in subscription and in contributing to the community.(I know I know, I haven't been around much to contribute lately. many new and exciting things happening here this summer.)
keep your chin up and your ears plugged,
I agree with several other of the community. get out the poles, worms and lawn chairs. kick back and watch the clouds and stars go by and convince the fish to byte on your line.
it really does relax and renew the spirit.

Well, it wasn't me. I don't send hate mail. Life is too short. I may tease you, Brad, but it is all in jest. You have my support, but please watch your language, as I've been told. I think its important that we realize the foundations of our great nation and the way the rules need to apply. Try looking at the funny side of those emails and the sadness of their being, and please, as my mother told me, don't stoop to their level. You're in a position here to be a great leader of a popular, and therefore powerful website. And remember, its not easy being a leader. Do leaders run away and quit? I hope not. Are they scared away? I hope not.

/me in best John Wayne voice impression " Wahl, then why don't you just eat me pilgram... "

hehe

Eh.. some people confuse them self and forget it isn't about them or exactly how important their opinion really isn't.

Conversely, my brother used to tell me "Opinions are like the common anus, everyone has one and both tend to really stink"

we need a Stick Up, Icon

I guess everyone gets angry sometimes. The wise ones digress, apologize and think about the big picture. The even wiser ones learn to "bite their lips", laugh, and move on. Someday, I hope to be one of the "even wiser ones".

Brad, keep your chin up. Someone said earlier that for every hate email you get, there's at least two people who appreciate the site and everything you folks do. I'd like to pipe up modify that figure somewhat more like 15:1 who appreciate.

Take your vacation bud. Go to Hawaii or to some paradise (Lab.06 at Microsoft would be a good start heheh.....).

I realize you can't just *ignore* the haters but then again maybe you should since they *didn't* get a subscription and probably shouldn't have access to anything more than a Lite version of WC to begin with....

Say, that's an idea. Make a WC-Lite site. Make WC a pay-per-scrip site, unaccessible to those who want to do nothing but leech (-aka- don't have a scrip) and let THEM use WCLite instead. Or maybe a redirect to ThemeXP.....

Good GOD I need sleep.

So Frogboy, bottom line, someone is making money off this site, stardock, Frogboy or who.
Or are you telling me that windowblinds and all the other software that is sold, is a losing business?

Iben....sensible business practise would have you devoting expenditure towards good 'PR' and public services, providing a general public awareness of your industry....and as Frogboy has mentioned before...a rising tide raises ALL boats...promoting even a rival's product [via hosting, etc] enhances the entire [skinning] industry.

This does NOT mean that it is a commercial Golden Goose.  It costs heaps of money.

The actual benefit is to a damn sight MORE than just 'Stardock', but to each and every person who feels the urge to skin or to use skins.

Everyone here benefits....BUT....

By and large, ONLY Stardock actually foots the [majority of] the bill.

Stardock's products are just as viably promoted through all the other skinning/GUI sites.....Wincustomize.com is not actually 'mission-critical' to Stardock's survival.

It is, however, critical to the on-going success and popularity of GUI skinning as a whole.

Any skinner would NEVER question who the beneficiaries of having a Wincustomize.com are.

Yeah... So, Iben,

Get on with it or...... go!

Wow! I believe I totally agree with you, Jafo, believe it or not. Amen!!!!!! There seems to be one in every crowd, which is why Brad and everybody else gets discouraged sometimes. Nicely said, Jafo.

also nicely said, China Cat!!

Admin Jafo

Sometimes questions have to be asked by brave soles like me.
By not answering this question skinners are left to believe that their hard work will amount to something. If this is not the case then this site is misleading skinners.

I was under the impression that WinCustomize (as a site) LOST money at a staggering rate, and its only from the support of Stardock (as a company) that it actually remains in existance.

Yes but how much software would stardock sell without this site as advertising.
