LOCKED OUT!

press alt-ctrl-del to go to the network login. type in your username and password and you can login. then change the logon.

If this doesn't work, you need to boot into safe-mode and change the logon screen there.

One quick question: did you use logonstudio, logonxp, or manually change the logon system file?

i've already trired that...ctr alt del does not work, safe mode still takes me to log on screen. and i used logonstudio and its not the first time i've used it. i chagned my screens on my desktop and they've been workin normaly for a very logn time. but i jus recently got my laptop and changed it, but i've never had this dam problem.

did you hibernate tone fee? that is what that thread is about.

Well if you can't get in through the "old" login and through safe mode, you have a little bit of a problem, now don't you.

Ho well. Lets see if this will work. let the computer start to boot. but during the boot where the bootskin shows (it does doesn't it?) force quit by pressing and holding down the power button when the bootskin sequence starts. Very bad computer practice for normal situations, but it does force windows to reset some options...not usually a good thing, but you gotta do, what you gotta do. Since you are using bootskin by stardock (you are aren't you?, because if you aren't this is easy to fix), there isn't much you can do in a dos console, or in a linux live cd. you have to open the program up in xp to make it change....(correct me if I am wrong someone). So have to try to sneak into windows. Don't do the power thing more than 2 times as you run the risk of really messing stuff up.

Laptops bios's are slightly different than desktops, and you probably shouldn't install a bootskin because it does have to change something in the boot sequence to work. Acpi, hibernation, etc. are all very important to xp specifically on laptops.

HELP!!! my computer has the same problem and no one is answering my post like 10 hours ago. I have a desktop and I've tried almost everything you guys recommended and nothing is working. I think it was when my computer couldn't shut down, I manually turned my computer off and then let windows xp scan my disk for errors. Now the usernames and shutdown buttons aren't appearing. What can I do?!

no i didnt hibernate. i jus normaly shut down and when i awoke... LOCKED OUT. hopefuly some one will let us back into jn819 our own laptops. yea i dont plan on using bootskins again if if manage to get bak in.

sorry haven't posted in a while, still thinking it over. Its kind of hard to fix something if you can't login to fix it. I wish I had windows installed right now. I could look to see exactly what bootskin does to put it into memory so it will load itself on boot. I suspect the boot.ini file, but I am not sure about that. but that is the ideal of what you would need to do. find where bootskin has made a change in some file and put it back the way it was before. The more I think about the more I think it is the boot.ini. Does anybody know? Or better yet will someone with bootksin installed post their boot.ini. Or if somebody knows that would be best....windows is so confusing after getting used to linux.

i would jus like to log into windows first, it so very frustrating being unabel to log in...its like trying to work on your motor in your car without being able to open the hood. even if it is the boot.ini file, how would i change it to default w/out being able to login... *sigh* dont mean to sound bitter, i'm just so very frustrated over something so small...

reformatting might be the most feasible solution. Have you tried booting into the console prompt safe mode?

yes i've tried safe mode, all of the modes still take me bak to logon screen

i've managed to be able to open 2 screens at the logon menu by pressin a a combination of keys.... one is the utility manager and the other is sticky keys, but neith has helpd me get bak into windows

well, gave up and stuck in xp boot cd, thought i was going to have to reinstall everything.... not exactly sure what happened, maybe i just lucked out, but either it repaired or re-installed or did both becuz it said it did both. anyways after it said it installed most of my programs were still there, minor losses, nothing unrestorable. but funny thing is it kept my custom boot skin, im not even changin the logon screen no more, so good luck to u jn819.

Well actually that makes sense that that would work. I should of thought of that. When you mess up stuff like that the xp boot cd will fix it most of the time. You have to actually format the hard drive to get rid of all your files. They will almost always stay there. It isn't guarenteed that it will be succesful but I had a very high successrate with fixing messups with system files back in my system file hacking days. Woot! you fixed it on your own. you should feel proud.

I used the network login as normal back in windows becuase it is much more stable then the normal one on my laptop. I never figured out why it was, but it was.

Bootskin, shmotskin. I've had trouble with that proggie for quite awhile now. Things do break. Is it worth all that trouble for a 13 second quickie? Ah, me. Now I'll be censored and flogged for saying such a thing. >

I wonder if these people are having problems because their systems are corrupted with conflicting software or previous software that hacked system files? Because, I've never had such a problem. But, I don't use BootXP or StyleXP. And once you install them your system stability is questionable and won't improve unless you remove the hacked system files. Which means a full system re-install, or the lucky solution by tone fee. I wouldn't blame Stardock or windowblinds for this problem.

Not true. If you unistall Style XP it restores the original uxtheme.dll file and removes the hack. (I am NOT promoting Style XP BTW)

As for stability, I never have a problem with any Stardock program. Ever. Bootskin has always ran fine.
