I'm terrified to download/use bootskins. The last (and only) time I tried it, was on the StyleXP website. The directions were to replace the login.gui file, and another file (can't quite remember now) with the one that I downloaded. It worked and everything, but windows XP wouldn't start up. It took me hours upon hours of trying to fix this problem and I finally gave up. Thankfully a more brillant PC person lived in my house than I, and he (aka "Dad") Installed Windows 98 as a second operating system. So I went in through Windows 98 and replaced the login.gui with the one I had backed up before I installed over them. Needless to say I'm very weary about doing anything to the bootskins/etc. now-a-days...

the bootskin program here doesn't affect your system files.

I don't know how it works but I have been using it since it came out and have had NO problems. I love it when my computer turns on and says "Windows XP Pirated Edition" absolutly priceless.

Omg I want the one you have!!! How hilarious is that? Then again I am still pretty weary about trying to use a different boot skin, I think OS is pretty unstable as it is, I hope it doesn't effect anything in my system what-so-ever...

If I am assured I there won't be any changes to the system files what-so-ever, I would definately try that one out! It's too funny to resist!

There are no changes to the system files, the program works by Hooking into a system pointer and points to the new graphic files to be displayed, there should be no problems when using the program, feel free to use it without worries

That 'other' boot screen replacement proggy is actually a hacked OS Kernel....which has the potential to mangle your system.....[the Kernel IS the system].

The Bootskin proggy as available here does not alter the OS at all and is safe to use.  The worst that 'may' happen is that a skin is poorly made with a different palette for the progress bar so as it loads it looks absolutely horrible....but no problem as once the OS is up you can simply change or remove that skin...
