Football Thread (real football, not the faux macho stuff)

Seeing as an NFL thread was started, I'd like to start a football thread (soccer) for all those football enthusiasts out there.

I guess I'll start the discussion off by talking about American players in the Premiership.

I think the best American player in the Premier League would have to be Timmy Howard (affectionately called T-Ho). T-Ho is, IMHO, the best keeper in the League, and one of the best in the world, going neck in neck with Brad Friedel (American) and Kahn (German, duh).

Also, a hot rumor topic, is Clint Mathis, the star American player who just left the Metrostars, and now isn't signed to a team OR league! I've heard some rumors, and these ARE just rumors, but I've heard that the Premier League, Man U in particular, is interested. That would be amazing! I's good to see that American soccer is getting a good nod...we've always been recognized for our keepers, but now with Mathis available, and McBride's recent loan at Everton, I think the strikers are becoming known too!

Let's get this going!

I remember seeing Kahn play in the World Cup. He was pretty darn good. Definitely one of the best keepers in the world.

Now we are talking.........this is "the game".......do you ever get chance to see the Spanish League games? I love watching "El Galacticos" Real Madrid play.....what a team.....Rinaldo, Raul, Beckham, Figo, Zidane. My Sunday nights would be empty without them

however, the super bowl will always be watched more than the world cup....

as for this topic I have nothing else to say.

are you so sure about that kona. The superbowl is one game. The world cup has a lot of games with millions of viewers for each one. I was in GB at the time of the world cup and by george I only saw about 2 tvs without it on and in a lot of shops the radio had it on too. I visited Ireland too and even a higher percentage watched the game there.

I wonder if the superbowl has more the final match of the world cup. It would be interesting if somebody could find out.

Actually Kona, soccer is the most watched sport in the world. And the World Cup, which is a series of matches leading up to one final match, is surely much more watched than the Superbowl. The final World Cup match has more viewers than the Superbowl. Also, American Football is, well, American, and despised in many other countries, but soccer is a universally watched and enjoyed sport.

You've gotta be careful of that American-centric 'world' view there....

Like the 'world' series baseball... where are the non-American teams ???

(absolutely no offence intended)

What, no one wants to discuss the great game?

Then I'll have a discussion with myself.

I hope Convey makes it to the Premier League, he shows some real promise.

Anyone here have Fifa 2004?

I have a fifa 2004 dock icon but not the game.

haha kona, well, at least that's a start!

WE, I only watch Man U because of Timmy Howard, despite the fact that he barely gets any action when hes out there because the defense is so damn good! I do like Man U, but I'm more of an Arsenal fan myself. That, and a New England Revolution fan for the States.

NUFC myself, but I don't mind watching Arsenal or Liverpool play.

Can't do much better than Shearer, imho... but then I am biased

Only footy match I've ever seen [and I live in the home of Aussie Rules] was Arsenal vs Stoke City.....1973....[Arsenal won]...

At the moment we are in the midst of trying NOT to be thrashed by the Indians in the Cricket....if only there were a minimum height limit for players they'd be stuffed....

Aussies getting thrashed

Breaks my heart...

Not a big footie watcher. The last match I saw was in 1972 when Sheff Wed played Santos. We only went to see Pele.

Oh, and some stats from the World Cup Final for our US friends:

Considered the biggest global sports event, the month-long 1998 FIFA World Cup™ in France drew a cumulative television audience of more than 33 billion viewers for its 64 matches. The 1998 FIFA World Cup™ Final between France and Brazil was viewed by one billion people, far exceeding the nearly 140 million viewers of the NFL Super Bowl each year.

America can lay claim to the biggest single event live spectator motor race....Indy 500.

Interestingly the second biggest was the 1995 [final] Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide....ticket sales ceased at 205,000 [venue limit].

Biggest live viewing 'trackside' of any 'racing' event is the Tour de France [though that is not a one day thing]....

Point of order Jafo.
Indy 500 ceased to be a 'motor race' after Tony George and the 'Idiot Racing League' took over .... or maybe that should be the 'Ugly Racing League'.... those cars make the Effwun Cookie Cutter cars look (almost) attractive.
Good Soccer is very entertaining IMHO .... and AFL has gone down the tube ever since the VFL became a 'National' league.
When did they ever play 'Football' at the Superbowl????
There's always a horde of dancing girls and guys in clown suits but SFA football!
Australia getting 'thrashed' .... more like self-immolation!

Super Bowl most watched event in '03
By Dex McLuskey
Bloomberg News

January's Super Bowl between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders was the most-watched sports event on television in 2003, according to a report by media company Initiative.
The National Football League showpiece attracted 92 million viewers in the 44 countries surveyed. It beat the European Champions League soccer final, with 79 million, into second place, said Kevin Alavy, who compiled the report for London-based Initiative.
The numbers were less than half last year's winner, the soccer World Cup final between Brazil and Germany, which had a global audience of 217 million. Initiative compiles the data for clients planning sports marketing campaigns.
"It makes quite a difference to the numbers when there's an event like the World Cup or the Olympics," Alavy said in an interview. "Some of these events, like the Super Bowl, are very costly to advertise in."
An advertisement during the Super Bowl can cost more than $2 million. About 96 percent of Super Bowl viewers were in the U.S., according to Initiative's figures.
The Champions League final may have attracted a bigger audience had the game not been contested between two Italian teams, Alavy said. AC Milan beat Juventus in the final.
In third place was the Brazilian Grand Prix, with 56 million armchair fans, followed by the 100 meters men's final at the World Athletics Championships, on 32 million. About 27 million watched Lance Armstrong gain a record-equaling fifth title on the last day of the Tour de France.
England's Rugby World Cup final victory over Australia was the sixth most-watched event, with a global audience of 23 million. Cricket's World Cup climax, between Australia and India, was next, with 20 million viewers, and was followed by the Wimbledon men's tennis final, with 15 million.
Game six of the National Basketball Association final between San Antonio and New Jersey was ninth, with 12 million viewers.

Just to put that into perspective....the number of people who watch the Tour de France WITHOUT a television is measured in the millions....yep...actually standing there to watch live...in the flesh...
